FP Collaboration with IIS 5.1 and XP Pro - 10/30/2005 2:10:21
I am running two computers at home, a desktop with Windows XP Pro and a laptop with Windows XP Home. I currently use my desktop as a staging FrontPage web development machine using FrontPage 2000 and IIS 5.1 and when I am satisfied with the way the page looks locally, I publish it to the master site hosted elsewhere. The problem is that I would like to use the laptop to login to my staging FrontPage web being hosted on my desktop but I cannot successfully login to my staging web from the laptop. I am prompted with a username and password but it will not accept it. I have configured the server extensions from the IIS Management Console and have added my user account to the admin group to no effect. I use to do this a long time ago with Windows 98 and PWS but cannot pull it off with Windows XP Pro with IIS 5.1. Does Microsoft not allow you to use Windows XP Pro with IIS 5.1 as a collaboration development server?

Hi and Welcome to OutFront 3 things I would check: 1. Temporarily turn off any firewalls on the XP Pro machine. 2. Confirm that the IUSR_machinename account has proper priv's to your web root. 3. Confirm that Anonymous access is allowed and turn off any other authentication. All these are only temporary to determine if it's a configuration issue or not.

Everything that you suggested to check is how IIS is currently configured. These items would seem to pertain to issues of logging into my web with FrontPage from my desktop, which is not the case. I am attempted to login to the web site from my laptop. I have just re-read my original post and it is kind of muddled, so I will try to be a little clearer: Machine 1 (Desktop) Windows XP Pro FrontPage 2000 IIS 5.1 with FP 2000 Extensions Staging Web Site Hosted Here Machine 2 (Laptop) Windows XP Home FrontPage 2000 From Machine 2 (Laptop), I try to login to the staging web site hosted on Machine 1 (Desktop). I am prompted with a username and password but it will not accept the credentials that I have setup for the staging web site. I am configuring it the same way I configure such things on my Windows 2000 Server with IIS 5.0 and FP 2000 extensions at the office. At the office, everything is fine. From home, things are not so good. Thanks for your suggestion, I would appreciate any more insight you may have. Grendelos

Am I reading this 'backwards'? Are you trying to log in with FrontPage? If so, I misunderstood. If so you need to have Windows Integrated authentication enabled (set it to clear text for now) as well as Authoring enabled in the FP Extensions settings. That help any?

Oddly enough, the solution is to uncheck "Integrated Windows authentication" and then check "Basic authentication." Now I can login from FrontPage on both my desktop and laptop. Now, however, the desktop requires a username and password whereas before it did not. But that is fine, I can live with that. Thanks for getting me in the right direction. Grendelos
