FP crash when saving the .dwt file - 10/31/2005 19:29:02
Hello everyone, i been using FP since FP2000 and currently using FP 2003.. I got this new FP problem that started after i updated my Microsoft office application with new service packs. 1. When i try to save a .dwt file thats attached to 420 html documents, it crash before updating; it seem to save the dwt file "when i re-open it again" but wont process updates - it just crash! 2. If i update another .dwt file thats attached to 40 html documents, it saves and shows updates complete, but its not really updating. After several try's and restarts i got it to update this dwt, but in case number 1 i still can not get it to save without crashing or even updating! I did a repair on FP and cleared my temp files and temp files under Local Settings, and the FP cache temp files as well, but problem is still there! Can anyone help? thanks!

After much hair-pulling with this problem, I figured out how to solve it! This is what I did; Before you follow these steps, copy your entire website folder and store it elsewhere as backup. 1. Close FrontPage 2. Go to the following directories and delete files in temp folder; C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Temp * If you happen to find a folder under "\Temp" titled “cache” delete its content as well. C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Temp 3. Delete the file "linkinfo.btr" found in “/mywebsite/_vti_pvt/” 4. Open FrontPage; open your website, click on Tools > Recalculate Hyperlinks > look inside the folder /mywebsite/_vti_pvt/ and you will see a new “linkinfo.btr” been created. 5. Save the .dwt file now and update all attached pages This should work and stops FP from crashing now. * linkinfo.btr stores all your website links in it, and overtime it gets bigger and bigger, when I deleted mine it was 26MB in size and the new one was 1 MB – I think the size of this file was the cause for FP crashing when trying to save dwt file. This solution is for locally stored and edited website and not FPSE live. http://www.islamicarchitecture.org back online!

ORIGINAL: jaybee Try looking in the Microsoft support for FP. My only thoughts at the moment are that maybe 420 pages is too much. I know there are limits on what FP can handle in some cases. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/FX010858021033.aspx It turned out that FP .dwt can handle up to 12,000 HTML documents!

I dont know if this adds to the topic but I have had my first experience with dwt in dreamweaver and here is what happened to me. i would work on the dwt template and click "preview in browser" which cause a "save" and then preview - however, the linked files werent being updated. by stumbling around, i concluded I have to do file/save at which point it asks me if i want to update and then i can preview. HTH
