Hello all, I had a company come over and setup a wireless router for the family. She told me that I did not need a software firewall anymore due to the fact that my router has a built in firewall.

Therefore, she uninstalled my norton internet security, and for virus protection she installed the free version of AVG. I also use microsoft's antispyware in the active mode and also scan a couple of times a week with adaware.

I am feeling a wee bit 'underinsured' at the moment and would just like to confirm with you all that my computers are as safe as they can be. I asked her about turning on the XP firewall and she said it wasn't necessary.

You can never be too secure. My router has a built in firewall, and I keep my software firewall installed on the PC for added security. You can control local programs that get access or try to access the internet with a local software firewall, with a hardware firewall (such as a router) you can't control this.

Security on a PC is something you can never have too much of

A Dan said. I totally agree. The best approach to security is a layered approach.

If you rely on the hardware firewall, what happens if someone bypasses that? If nothing is behind it, they have 'free reign'.

I use a hardware firewall, software firewall, virus protection, all the popup blockers and stuff, NAT, and "stealthed" ports.

I still feel sometimes I need more. [8|]

I wouldn't. Your PC is defenceless from attacks from other PCs that are also connected. For example, if a member of the family has a laptop that's used outside the home, you have to assume it's infected and can't let it be connected to your network.

get a software firewall.

Download the freebee from ZoneAlarm or turn on the XP firewall at the very least. It doesn't cost you anything and the minor inconvenience is well worth it in the long run.

Thank you all for your responses. I have turned on the XP firewall and will see how it affects the computers if at all. Will look at ZoneAlarm's freebie too.

Dankos, as the one lone dissenter, I am not sure I understood your post.

As I told Thomas a couple of years ago, I rarely ever post, because 99.9% of the time I find the answer just by using the search feature. I do lurk often though! [:D]

Reading these posts reminds me of a line from an old movie "even paranoids have real enemies"

I have: Router for hard firewall, Zone Alarm, XP's firewall turned on, sweep daily with Norton AntiVirus, sweep daily with Spy Sweeper and also Ad-Aware.......

with all that my brother tells me I am not worried enough.
