Tracer -> Vince's Drop Down Menu (8/24/2001 13:50:00)

I am trying to "find" some space on some of my more crowded web pages and was wondering what the thoughts are, of using only a Drop Down Menu such as offered by Vince in the sales area of this site. Is is a bad thing not to have the "normal" navigation menus on the left hand side that you see most places? Is this type navigation compatible with enough browsers that we won't be driving too many visitors away? Any thoughts would be appreciated. What browsers would be unable to navigate if this was the only navigation system available?

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

You'd alienate far fewer than 1% of your visitors - add a text alternative at the bottom of the page and everyone is happy (this should be done anyway). Personally I like using the drop-downs for sections and the left bar for main pages. Enough people use the Microsoft site and others with similar navigation - I don't think the drop-down idea is particularly foreign to visitors.

DHTML won't work in pre NN4.7 browsers and pre MSIE4 I believe, but don't quote me on it. Those users will just see the background colour of your cell and no error message.

Cheers
Andy

I could not find an example of sub menus for the Vince PopOut menu. Can you have sub menus under a main menu?
Are there examples of sites that are using the Vince Menu somewhere other than the one listed on the info page?
Is there a way to have a small graphic with an arrow or something else that indicates there are sub menus (assuming you can do sub menus)?

Thanks,
Mark
