mommylonglegs -> My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 9:12:14)

Please can someone help me. My Windows XP wont load. Have put OS CD in and done a repair and it comes up 'C' drive is corrupt and cannot be repaired.
I have a lot of important files that I really do not want to loose. So I dont want to do a complete re-install of windows.
Laptop is only 11 months old, and have extended warranty and accidental damage for another 3 years. But do not really understand whether the drive malfunction is my fault or Laptop's Can someone please advise.
Jenny.

There is a way of retreiving data but if you are paying for warranty, why not as the company to do it?

jaybee -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 10:10:42)

If it's still under warranty then get someone in to sort it out.

If the C drive really is corrupt then the only thing you can do to get it going again is reformat it and just hope the drive itself isn't damaged. As mentioned above, your data can be retrieved but if the drive is damaged and you have to go to specialists it's expensive.

I know it's after the event and everyone will say this till you're sick of it but, if you'd kept backups then it wouldn't be so much of a problem. When the machine is sorted if you have a CD writer in it then backup weekly to a rewritable CD. If it doesn't then get yourself an external USB drive and backup to that.

The only other possibility is that you have a virus of some sort which is throwing that message but if you can't even load the op sys then you can't check.

Get the experts in.

I would say welcome to outfront but I expect you'd rather not be here at all. Commiserations. We all learn the hard way. [&o]

Thank you for your replies. I still do not know if my problem will be covered under the warranty. Because I am not sure what all this means. Is it my fault that this had happened, or is it the Laptops,. Sorry to sound so daft.
Jenny.

jaybee -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 10:51:22)

Absolutely no idea. It depends what's wrong. It could be a damaged drive and that could be due to dropping the laptop or knocking it against something or just a bad drive. It could just be a corrupt file on Windows, it may be you accidentally deleted something vital or it could be a virus.

Call the support line for your warranty, tell them you're getting a corrupt c:\ drive error and let them take it from there.

Don't ask them whether you've done something wrong, assume you haven't until they prove otherwise. Some support sections will take the easy route and dump the problem back on you if you give them the chance.

Jenny: I cant see how it could be classified as your fault. Is your service local where you take it in or is it distant/mail-it-back? Local would be better so you could talk with them and see if they can try to salvage your data. How important is your data ( he asks knowing everyones data is important)? It might be worthwhile to look through your local phone ads and see if there is a company who does repairs to call them and see if they can salvage it. The warranty folks are likely to just plop in a new hard drive although if they do, make sure they give you the old one - someone may still be able to extract it.

A good worksman always blames his tools

A good user is never at fault, always blames the worksman

You're either a worksman, or a user. Take ya pick [;)]

dpf -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 11:43:49)

you silly boy gio - seriously, what advice do you have for her?

d a v e -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 11:44:27)

just thinking out loud but before taking it to the company (or at least in the meantime, rather) how about downloading something like Ubuntu on a friends computer and burn the disk image on er welll a disk (cd) then run ubuntun live from the cd

that way you can see if the drive can be accessed at all from there or wether it is not a windows thing but a physically damged/faulty drive;  you might be able to see whether you can get to some of your important files, maybe even email them to yourself/someone, or ftp them or something

thoughts anyone??

Giomanach -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 11:48:13)

Without the fault codes from the BSODs or knowing what the machine gives as an error report, JB has given all the advice already.

Could be software, could be hardware, only way I can tell is either by BSOD error numbers, or the error it gives when booting windows.

Get the manufacturer/retailer on to it - they will have the equipment to recover any data on the HDD, and should be able to replace any fault parts.

jaybee -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 12:31:21)

Dave, yes ubuntu is an option as is Bart PE but, and forgive me Jenny if I'm wrong (I've upset enough people this week [&o]) it sounds like it might be a little too technical for Jenny to deal with.

Bart PE wasn't a doddle to set up and being confronted with Linux is likely to cause a heart attack.

d a v e -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 14:34:52)

true - best leave it in the hands of the manufacturer - as long as they try and get your files if possible! :)

Check your local market for a Linux User or similar magazine... one that comes with any bootable Linux CD... SUSE, Knoppix, Slack, etc... doesn't matter.

You can also download them, buy a book that comes with them, order them over the phone or online, etc. But magazines are a great place to get them.

You may be asked to do scary sounding things like boot into your BIOS to change your BOOT SEQUENCE but it's all just geek talk for "press this key" and then "that one"

You can probably still save your files though.

If you have at least 2 CD drives (one being a CD-RW) then you boot into one and use the other to burn files for backup. You can also plug in an external (USB) hard drive, USB Thumbdrive, etc.

The system will boot up using the CD drive and unless your hard drive is completely zapped you should be able to see, copy, paste or burn your files somewhere else until you can get your Windows installation fixed.

And by fixed I mean completely replaced with a new install on a new hard drive. [;)]

Knoppix (or Ubuntu or SimplyMepis or... any of them) will look and act enough like what you're used to that you can do this all yourself with minimal tutoring and just a little effort.

The other option is to take it into a local shop and ask them to:

A) install a new hard drive
B) Reinstall Windows on new drive (bring in your disk)
C) recover important files from old drive and save onto new drive

dankos -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/4/2005 22:25:41)

Your laptop vendor might replace the drive if its mechanically defective, but I can't conceive that they would assume responsibility for lost files. You do an incremental backup weekly and a full backup monthly right[;)]?

I've recovered a number of PC and laptop drives using this:

Look also at the Google ads at the right for recovery services.

wilbilj -> RE: My 'C' drive is corrupt. (11/7/2005 5:41:02)

Here is another data recovery program. It is a little on the expensive side but it works. (Let's just say it saved a marriage, all the pics of the kids were on the HD and they should of been on cd. My buddy's wife wasn't too happy!!!)

http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecoverylite/

You need to load it on a working HD so that it has a place to put all the files from the bad drive.

PM or Email me and I might be to get him to send me a copy.

Hey guys,

I know this is an old thread, but I'd like to know, how do you use a Software program,
if you can't even login to Windows?

I tried a re-install, but my formerly known as C drive, is listed as Unknown,
and it's corrupt, or un-readable, etc.

All I did was restart my computer, and then I wasn't able to go past into the loading Windows part,
can't get in by Safe Mode, Last Known Configuration, and can't re-install either. :(

I have Windows XP SP3.

Any ideas?

..... You don't and, having been there on four occasions, I'd say you're all but running on empty [X(]

Try the following as a last gasp effort (you may still be able to recover your files from the corrupted drive, so set it aside):

Boot from your Windows Installation CD, then run all four of the following commands:

FIXMBR C:
FIXBOOT C:

At the DOS prompt

BOOTCFG /rebuild
CHKDSK /r

Lastly (and this is for future reference) read the thread on Acronis True Image.
