beginning last week (nov 3) when reinstalling windows XP 2003 (sp1) I cant publish with FP.

It stays forever at "looking for website" and does nothing. Finally it says "the server timed out". It should ask for a user and password, but it doesn't. It happens for all sites and against several servers.

I donŽt know whether it is related, but I remember that for every site, FP created what they call a web folder on "My web sites". I canŽt create them by hand anymore (the target should be on my "work group" or "domain", only I want it on the web)

If somebody has some idea... (or the solution)

Have you tried opening the WEB site with Front Page using the IP address instead of the Name? It may be an issue with the change to XP and how you have the TCP/IP setup in XP.

If you can open the site using the IP, then more than likely the issue is with your setup of XP. If you can not open the site wiht the IP, then the issue may be with your ISP access. How did they tell you to set your DNS in the TCP/IP?

The guys at the server are trying to charge me for the IP, so I will try other things before. One I've tried and worked. I can publish using a modem/phone connection, but not by my regular broadband cable connection.

Some idea? (I know that something is misconfigured, but have not a clue about what can be)

Not aware you were using Cable access. I use to run an ISP and we sold Dial up, Wireless, SDSL, ADSL, T1 access, T3 and so on. With each I found it rather strange that when someone went to cable (dialup was not fast enough, xDSL was too expensive) that they always came back and asked us to help them get their cable service going. We were always blaimed for 'putting something on their computer to prevent the cable access from working'. Lest I get started on Cable.

Anyway, try this.

Start>Control Panel (or Network Connections)>go into the Network Connections>open the TCP/IP. What does it say? With the Cable outfits I have looked over they normally want the TCP/Ip set to Obtain an IP address Automatically and the DSN is set to Auto also.

Given these are correct (set to auto), then launch your browser adn make sure you can browse to the WEB site and it comes up properly. This working, ping it using 'ping www.sitename.ext' (not an IP). Make sure you do this from a Prompt. When you ping, it will come back and display the IP address of the Site. It may be a 'Virtual' site but at least you will know the IP of the Hosting Virtual server.

Okay, now we are still just checking.

You mentioned that your ISP would not give you the IP of the Site. This actually is not the recommend method (there I go, an opinion) but it is okay. Some ISP's in order to save on assigned IP addresses, pool all the hosted sites under a single or a few IP addresses. It all still works, but when something goes wrong, it makes it more difficult to track down.

I do believe the whole problem is on your local machine.

Have you tried going to another computer and opening the site? If you like, give me the address of the site and I can load either FP2000 or FP2003 and see if I can access it. I do not need the username or password. I will just see if I can access it for importing.

Let me give a bit more thought on this and I will check back later.

This may have absolutely nothing to do with it but I had some odd ftp problems recently after my host had changed to a new server. Had exactly the same hanging problem and it turned out I needed to set it to PASV (passive mode) don't know whether FP has a setting for that but if it does it might be worth trying.

Second. Everything seem to function, but for the FP publishing. I can use the browsers, I can FTP to my sites. I can FTP from FP also, it is awfully slow but works. IŽm pretty sure now that the problem is in the configuration at the card level, in some feature used only for opening MS web sites

As I was trying to get rid of a nasty adware not detected by any adware soft (FP had worked for years before that) I formated the harddisk and reinstaled XP and XP (sp1) (now running) several times. It never worked again (because I keep making the same config mistake again and again?)

I forgot to ask this, which FP version are you running? I think I know someone who ran into this problem, but it was with FP 2003. They actually have both FP2000 and FP2003 loaded on the same machine, and because of varying differences between the updates, use one or the other. I also have both loaded, but do not have this type of a problem. Let me check with them and I will get back to you.

Okay, I think i went the wrong direction on this. My Mistake. I think I have it figured out. I talked with another designer who uses FP exclusively and she said that the problem is more than likely at the ISP (host). Here's why, as you mentioned you can publish with FTP, you can handle this on the Dial Up side too. The commonality with the problem is the Cable outfit. She said that she has ran into situations where one of two situations occur: 1) the hosting company says they have the FP server extensions loaded, and they actually do not as evident by the fact you can publish using FTP, 2) the cable company has 'blocked' port 80 for one reason or another.

Not sure which one you are dealing with, but get them on the phone and be on line at the same time. Get their tech to walk you through the access and publish with them on the phone, in this manner they can not say it is some thing you are doing.

Sorry I took you in the wrong direction initially, just that tech support nature I have to look at the local before I ever think at looking at the upper levels.

I'm, using (and had been for a long time) FP2003.

The fact that you can publish by ftp doesn't mean that they don't have the extensions You can do both, even when it is goint to bring problems if you use FP navigaton, as FP doesnŽt know that you uploaded by its back. But for just replacing file versions, it works. I'm sure that they have the extensions, because I have been publising against them until last week, and for the fact that I can publish by phone. The error is not in their side (Ha! as if I knew). Rephrase: I THINK the error is not on their side.
And it happens with all the servers in which I have FP sites (I use FP professionally).

IŽll keep testign altenatives, but IŽm pretty sure that I have a problem with my card or XP's firewall configurations.
