Slow as Molasses - 8/29/2001 17:27:00
My FP 2000 program is working very slowly and seems to get worse each time I opn it up. It takes 30+ seconds to go from one command to another depending on which page I am working on. It takes forever to copy and paste. When I first installed it on this computer it wasn't this way. But after a few months it just got slower and slower...

I have a 386 processor and 96 megabytes of RAM. My other programs work reasonably well & quickly, so I am confussed. I know I need a bigger computer, but I can't afford one right now.

Does anyone have any suggestions or help. I'm getting so discouraged, I can only complete one page in four hours this way.

Did you add any Add-ins to FP? Some of them will slow it down like that.

There's one in particular that was really bad, but I don't recall what it was....something to do with html?

Something to try would be in Windows Explorer go to c:\windows\temp\FrontPageTempDir and delete all the files (No sub directories). Do this when FP is closed.

Darn, I don't have any add ons and deleating the temp folder contents didn't seem to improve things. This is so fustrating! Shouldn't it work with about the same speed as Word?

I'm about ready to give up on it and just use word... I really like shared borders and I got my theme customized, so it'd be alot of work to switch.

Hi,

Only other thought I have is you mentioned it keeps getting slower. How many programs have you installed since installing FP? That might be a factor. What I would try, in this order is:

1) No insult here...Right click on recycle bin and then click on empty.

2) Go to Windows Explorer and right click on c:, then click on properties. How much free space is there? Windows by itself needs free space for what is called a "swap file".

3) If all else fails you could, going left field here, hit CTL-ALT-DEL ONCE. You will get a popup window. It will probably list a few things. Close everything but systray and explorer. This will free as much resources as possbile. keep in mind while in this state some thngs might not work (Example a scroll wheel mouse might not scroll until after you reboot). Keep in mind that when you reboot this will let whatever reload so you are doing nothing permanent here. You would have to repeat this process everytime though.

No insult on 1) just going from easiest to hardest.

From what has been posted here and what you said your machine has hardware wise I am betting that you are getting low on free space on your hard drive. Not betting the farm though . When drive space gets low the PC will slow down for several reasons.

Do other programs seem "slower" on your machine?

Also, clear out your temporary internet files (or cache, depending on what browser you use) and maybe even defragmenting your hard drive will help.

If the defrag doesn't help, try uninstalling and reinstalling FP. It will not hurt your webs.

Err... a 386? really?

Right click the "Mycomputer" icon > properties > performance > system resources

It = ?

DEFRAG!
Check hard drive space!

Side note: I really couldn't imagine even running win9x on a 386. *Everything* would seem slow as molasses! And to think, with the current processor price wars, I'm even considering building a new 1.5 Ghz machine (as if my P3 1 Ghz desktop & 850 laptop weren't enough)!

Yeah, ok, so I like my "toys!"

After rebooting, running ScanDisk and Disk Defrag (a must!), check here for more tips on freeing on hard drive space: http://www.5starsupport.com/newsletter/january2001.htm#3

If still in need of further help, contact the techs there at 5 Star Support -- they provide free tech support.

Good luck.

Did you mean 386Mhz, or a 386??

386 Mhz, my hard drive is hardly anything 1.18G... my real computer got wiped out by a virus a few months ago and I'm making do with one we gave the kids. No money to replace it right now so I guess I'm just going to have to make due.

I checked out Frontpage Express today. I don't like the extra tags and such, left by word, and so it looks like the second best thing to a real editor. I'll have to copy and paste the whole 100+ site into new pages, and take out the extra tags, but in the long run I'll be closer to getting done by my deadline. Maybe if I can meet my deadline, I'll get the $$$ for a new system.

FP sure does spoil you. I forgot how much work it is to figure out the navigation in your head. I also miss having the whole site use a theme. Setting up the look is a pain when it's one page at a time.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions, I tried all of them. It's too bad it is a matter of not having any hard drive space. Can't fix that right now. I have so little installed on it already. Just what I have to have and I can't get rid of anything more.

A tired :-)

Kita -

I'm running FP'00 on a PII 266 w/ 96 megs RAM & 20 gig HD. I defrag at least 2x/week. I close all other apps when in FP. And I have the same problem as you.

It seems that the heavier the page on which you're working, the slower the program becomes. When working on a new page, the program seems to run at normal speed.

It's a time waster and quite annoying to have to stop and wait for nearly every keystroke.

Just wanted to empathize...

I'm finding that despite the missing features building pages with FP xpress is much more pleasant than all of the waiting.
