Avery 4013 Label Printing - 11/9/2005 14:07:11
First, thanks to Spooky for adding this forum. I come here periodically when having problems or questions on FrontPage, but now I will be back more often with hthis forum. Thanks On to the question for today. Any one figure out why when printing Avery 4013 (12 up) labels to an OKI ML590 printer using Word 2000 mail merge, that the labels print 12, then skip two, print 12, skip two, and so on? Maybe this is not the best location to ask, but let's see what we get. Thank you

RE: Avery 4013 Label Printing - 11/10/2005 18:32:55
Jaybee, Thank you for the post. But, I have the latest drivers. I have been messing around with it again today. I took and fired up the old Windows 98SE machine. Launched Word '97, used the mail merge and selected mailing labels. Created the output by using a database of addresses. Checked the details for the labels (Avery 4013). Tried a test print and it it printed fine, no skipped labels. So, then I hooked the printer back up to the W2K Pro machine, went into Word '97 and created the exact same on the Windows 98 machine. Next I tried a print to the Okidata ML590 printer with the 4013 labels loaded. Sure enough, it skipped two labels. Next, I created a PDF from the same Word '97 for the output. I reviewed it, and it looked good. So, I sent it to the printer and it worked. No skipped labels. So, I think I have isolated it to something in Word or a combination of Word and Windows 2000 pro. I think more than likely it is to do with something W2K Pro adds, just a gut feeling. I have been all over the place trying to resolve this. An associate asked me to send him the output from the printer to a file on both the Win98 unit and one from the W2K unit. He said he will try to use 'debug' to see the difference. Still, I am not so sure this will tell the story, or fix. Still needing help. Thanks

Andy, Thanks for your reply Yes it is set for letter size. I have even gone in and double checked to make sure that when the merge selection for the Avery 4013 labels is ready and I go to print, the properties show that the out labels are 4.5" wide and the length of label page is 12". This is absolutely correct for the labels. I tried changing to the 4010 labels (one up versus 12 up) and that created a problem in that when I sent the print out to the printer, the printer form feeds an entire box of labels (of course I stopped it about the fourth page). I have also tried setting the printer page length to 12" to no avail. I wish I had access to a good debug GUI program. The DOS debug is cryptic at best and I am not a programmer. If I could just look at the raw data being sent from Word on the W2K Pro machine, maybe I could find something. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks Rick

Larry, Thanks for the info. I downloaded the Limited edition a few days ago, but it does not offer the 4013 labels. Cost wise, I think this is a good route to go, but first I need to determine if the 'full' version offers the 4013 labels. Reason I need to stay with the 4013 labels is we have boxes and boxes of them. We also have a slick labeling machine that you place up to 1000 envelopes in it, feed the 4013 labels into it, turn it on and in a few minutes all the envelopes are labeled. Works very nicely. I guess I better give Avery a call. Still would like to find out what is going on with the Word '97 on Windows 98SE and Word '97 on W2KPro. Why the labels skip two, when the only difference is the OS. I Refuse to pay Microsoft on this. Thanks

Larry, Went out and tried out the Avery product and found that it has the 4013 labels in it if you choose the design from scratch option and not the wizard. Now the problem is, most of the information (addresses) we print labels for are either in a word doc or an access database. neither of which the avery product can import. They only show an import feature for dBase III. I'll keep on it though. Thanks

FrogMan, have you had any resolution to this problem? I have stumbled on this same problem myself and can't for the life of me find a fix. We have our databases in Excel and require a mail merge. Word perfect is throwing off the print a fraction of an inch when sent to the printer, so that doesn't help me. Let me know, thanks.

Hi there, I never had much look when I use to try and print my own labels, I was using mail merge software in word but I could never get the printer to print onto sheets of labels for some reason. I actually gave up printing my own labels as found a company in the midlands that could implement multiple databases onto their thermal printing machine, ie would take my database and create unique thermal labels based on my data. Saved me a lot of messing around really, and still allowed me to do one off labels for each customer for example.
