Toshiba Wireless Laptop Problem - 11/10/2005 13:46:07
Ok this may be a bit long sorry. I found this site doing a search on Google.. I have a desktop computer with Windows XP. A couple years back I bought a Tivo and in order to hook up my Tivo through the computer instead of the phone line I need a wirelss router and adapter.. I bought a Link Sys 811B router and a Lynk Sys wireless adapter to go with it. It is what Tivo recommended.. A year later I bought a Toshiba Laptop with a wireless card. Worked out good since I had this router. It worked fine in the house all over excpet at one website Pogo.com I would lose my connection to the game server but not my whole internet connection... A few months back I wanted to have both of my Tivos networked together. I had bough another Tivo and one of my Tivos was still hooked up to the phone line. Anyway all I needed was another wireless adapter plugged in to the USB of my other Tivo and some software installed on my desktop. Best Buy did not have the same Link Sys adapter version 4 so they sold me a Net Gear that was a G not a B and said it would work. So now I see both recordings on both Tivos and can transfer back and forth and both Tivos use the network to get TV Guide info instead of the phone line.. Someone broke my laptop by accident a few weeks ago and I went to Best Buy and found another Toshiba Satellite at a good price with the same if not better features as my old one. This one has an Atheros wireless card in it. I lose my whole internet connection all the time.. I constantly have to click on disconnect and reconnect... Toshiba had me call Lyk Sys after doing a couple things. Lynk Sys said if my Tivo adapters are working then there is nothing wrong with the router. I unplugged both Tivo adapters last night which Toshiba recommended to try and still kept getting booted off line on the laptop. Under view wirless networks I think I saw netgear listed one of my wireless adapters but I had unplugged it. Noone seems to know why I am getting intermitten connection on the laptop. The Router people said my Wireless adapters for Tivo only receive don't put out so they shouldn't interfere with my laptop andme losing my online connection.. I was told to go sit in a coffee shop for a couple hours and see If I lose it there which I haven't done yet. I did it one day for maybe 45 minutes and it stayed online. I am sure it's something in my house.. Is my router old since it's just an 811 b and my laptop has a newer card then my old one and it's something G but it works with B? Do I need to turn off my desktop when using the laptop? I get internet on the laptop but every so often it drops and I am no loger on line. I even uninstalled the driver and rebooted and let it reinstall.. Desktop is fine and both have Windows XP... Sorry for the long post I just didn't know if someone could help me or has a solution to my problem. Thanks, Rose

Ok Thanks will do... I don't think anything is turning off and on when it crashes.. I am in a 1 BR condo and there is noone next door... I was told maybe someone else was using my network and that could bump me off and I made my network secured. So I don't know what it is.. <y two Tivo wirless adapters are plugged in to USB then a plug is going into the adapters.. I just unplugged that plug not the ones in the back into the USB but it made the lights go off on the adapters so I assumed they were off. But if going to a coffee shop and staying atleast an hour to an hour and a half and nothing happens then it is definately something in my house. I'll try that other site though thanks. I only came here cause I did a google search on losing online connection on Toshiba laptop. Thanks Again, Rose

I have 2 Toshiba's that depending on where they're located, they either have to "Let Windows manage the wireless connections" or not. A quick thing to try would to be to switch that off if it were on or vice versa. I know it sounds very strange but that is exactly what we have to do with 2 laptops. Seems to have to do with the specific wi-fi router.

So find that setting on my laptop not the desktop and turn it off or on? Where would it be what do I go under? I'll try that if I can find it.. I also posted my same message just now at the WiFi forum. Thanks, Rose
