Can't open my website as usual -- virus? - 11/10/2005 16:23:21
I've used FrontPage 2003 since it came out without incident until recently. Now when I start FrontPage and try to open my website I get this error message:
The folder 'http://www.writeanswer.org/' isn't accessible.
The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected by a password or the filename contains a / or \.

I've also gotten this message on occasion:
Server error: Configuration file "": value "FrontPageRoot" not found.

In either case the user name and password box no longer appears as usual, and I can't find a way for FP to open the site. I haven't done anything major to my site, nor has my web host, who says the extensions are in good working order. I did install a Bit Defender trial, then quickly uninstalled when it didn't play nice. Long ago I disabled Windows Security Center's firewall and rely on my router's, which hasn't changed to my knowledge, so I don't know of any settings to unblock FrontPage.

I otherwise have AntiVir and Prevx running, but neither has changed recently. Prevx's "Event History," though, showed several entries like this: "Prevx has detected FRONTPG.EXE[3060] trying to access a protected system file." It further says "Policy causing this event: INF Files in Program Areas" and concludes with "The action has been allowed."

I don't browse with IE, but there was a time when I could open my domain in IE with the FrontPage edit button. So I dusted off IE and tried its edit button, but I can't publish or save the edited file online. FP03 further refuses to let me use the "Open Site" box's "Search the Web" button to open the site, giving me this error message:
"Opening (gibberish of seven strange characters)
Hyperlinks can be harmful to your computer and data. To protect your computer, click only those hyperlinks from trusted sources. Do you want to continue?"
When I click the yes button, I get this:
"Opening (gibberish again)
Some files can contain viruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this file is from a trustworthy source. Would you like to open this file?"
I choose no and the browser attempt fails.

Once I used Windows Explorer to locate and open my website (perhaps before FP03). I remember seeing the link under my hard drives in the left panel. Now, the link is inside the Network folder. But FP03 doesn't see it, just the Entire Network, not the link.

This may not be related, but when I just went to defrag my computer, PerfectDisk immediately said: "Failed to connect to computer... The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." And O&O balked, too, claiming: "No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it. (10061)" That's known as winsock error WSAECONNREFUSED, but I don't know what to do with that knowledge.

Does this mean I've got a virus working or what? Anybody got any ideas?

Run an online virus check, no idea why you had problems with bitdefender I run it all the time. Take a look at AVG.

Once you're happy you're clean, grab as many free spyware checkers as you can and run those through - Spybot S&D, Adaware, Spywareblaster etc.

Once you have done that you know it's unlikely to be a virus or trojan. Then I'd do a windoze repair or re-install and see if that fixes it.
