I have a website and I resubmitted it to google, msn and yahoo because I could not find it. I do not have anyone linking to me, or I think you call them "incoming links". How do I get others to link to my site? Help Please... I am a newbie!

Contact sites in the same 'area' as yours and them if they'd link to you, and you do the same for them in return is one way. Backlinks have more value if they're relevant to your subject matter.

In the case of a business site could backlinks be self-defeating? Even if you link to a site that doesn't sell ( eg an embroiderer linking to a sign maker) what your site sells, a potential customer could click to one of the back linked sites & never return to your site? Is this just the chance you take? I guess you need to be careful who you link to???

Yes, I agree. Currently, the site focuses on skin care products and high quality nutritional supplements. I am worried if I start linking with people in those areas, they will leave my site and go to the competition. Any comments greatly appreciated!

good points - understand that the inventors of Google come from the academic community and their bias is that web is for information - not commerce - so from that vantage point, when researching a topic, you want links to similar sites - make sense? commerce has to work around it..lol

So I think what you are saying is that maybe I should only link to informational sites that will help the consumer with their skin and health concerns? Do I just start searching the web, and when I find a site I think would be a good match, send them an email about linking?

Just what I was thinking Tail! I'd suggest trying to get links from sources of information on areas connected to your site's subject, rather than commercial sites.
Also, getting listed in business directories might be an option.

ok... I just came across http://www.linkstoyou.com. Does anyone know if this is good, or is this bad for the search engines? This is what it says it does:

Finding links in a social network is all about trust. Are you sure the person linking to you is not working for Google?

Search engines take the view that altering your site for the sole purpose of increasing your search enine ranking is spam. It seems that most people that are actively looking for links are really looking for higher search ranking - and more traffic.
If your site is really full of rich content that only you provide you shouldn't have to look for links - they will come to you.
