Hey all....great site...been looking throught the threads and havent seen an answer to my dilema...

Been hositng a personal site with mainly images for about 2 years and then i moved, computer crashed and lost the web. Luckily, I had it backed up in June but now it does not work. I never had to publish or use FTP or extenaions, it just worked....

Details:
new computer
site on c drive
windows XP (firewall off)
mocrosoft wireless router (forwarding port 80)
front page
network solutions ok with domain
zoneedit ok with forwarding
IP address not reaching my computer.

Are the settings in xp/frontpage I should be looking at???

another question....do i have to direct anything in front page to the web, meaning in laymans terms, how does the webforward Ip know where to look for the website and how does the website become identified? Should I be saving it a certain way or as a certain file?

If you can't figure out how to run a web server from your local computer, you might be better off with paying for hosting. There are many potential security risks when trying to run your own webserver (if you don't know everything that you are doing). If you are with Network Solutions right now, you can switch to a decent Domain Registrar, and use the money saved to pay for some cheap hosting.

EXACTLY....BUT, everything is different....new computer, location, ISP, etc.....using Bob's guidance...thanks Bob, I installed the additional XP component to use web server.

Now when I do http://localhost I get the directory list for the local path/home directory....i feel like i am close but something is stopping the IP address....

What happens when you type in a specific page name too? It sounds like you dont have a default page setup ?

ok, now....when i do the http://localhost, i get my main index page!!! ohhhh....so close!!! I changed the default document to index.html to get this...

so to your questions....when I type in www.gregandpaige.net it times out....i would agree with the default page set up. i have it going to the folder where the website is....

So - from that, I would guess that the DNS is still set up for the old server / host?
You have a static IP address?

no, not from the old one....this is all a fresh install, everything is new. I am using dynamic, how do i specify static?

Hi again Spooky....

I even took the router out of the equation....updated the IP on Zoneedit and still get the "can't find www.greandpaige.net".

Can still see the index page on the http://localhost

Should I ask for static IP/DNS from my ISP?

Can anyone else help? Both Zoneedit and netowrk solutions say their systems are working appropriately and that the issue is with my setup. I dont know what else to check.....please help!

That's done thru the Network control panel and TCP/IP properties. If you're using standard DNS services, you need to be using a static IP address.

If you're using a dynamic address, there are solutions out there - I use dns2go from Deerfield.com

May not be an issue but do the changes propagate immediately or does it take a while for the new IP to get recognised?

If you're talking about the static IP on the computer, that is recognized instantly. If you're talking about a change to an IP address at the registrar, that can take up to 72 hours but usually (from my experience anyways) is done witin 2 hours.
