Chitika - 11/17/2005 11:14:31
Hello there!

I did a forum search and nothing came up for Chitika, which surprised me. Anyone using it and, if so, how's it going? thanks.

I'm seeing good reports about them on another forum, but it's hard to know how much of that is hype by people looking to sign other people up. One thing that does seem to be emerging about it is that it's much better suited to a site that deals in tangible products rather than information or services. And I've seen one report of someone who was turned down by them, who didn't have a product-oriented site. Hope that helps. :)

Thanks Starhugger!

I've been using it for over a week now and it's been a roller coaster ride. But rather than give up with it as I've read so many website owners say they are doing, I've been experimenting with ad placement and how Chitika and AdSense can co-exist without a significant drop in revenue.

The work has paid off and I'm pleased. I realize the program is still in beta so anything can happen. I'm going to stick with Chitika as long as it makes sense for me.

I'm still surprised it hasn't been discussed at Outfront, as it is in other web designer forums. Is there a reason?

*shrug* Dunno. It seems to me that Outfront is strong on coding and technical help, but doesn't always focus on website marketing concerns as much as other websites. But then other websites may not focus as well on coding and tech issues either. Each board has its strengths. :) The site I go to for great info and advice about affiliate programs is associateprograms.com. (Hoping it's okay for me to mention it by name here.)

It seems most OF members are interested in the technical aspects of building a site. Online marketing and certainly sales are often looked at as being the easy part of the site. Often, by the time someone realized that monitizing a site is much more complicated than building them they have either lost interest, too much money or time and just move on. Webmasterworld just threw themselves out of the search engines with the appearance that it cost too much to have the search bots eating up bandwidth. It looks like they couldn't make enough to cover search and server expenses....
I do a lot of buying and selling of sites and find that the vast majority of sites don't sell. Most have great potential, but the owners cut their development teeth on these sites and feel the countless hours spent on them justify a high sell price when there is very little actual income. I don't track the percentages, but when these sites don't sell most of the domains are simply left to expire.

Anyhow, I tried Chitika with mixed success. It's certainly worth running a few weeks as a test.

Update - It looks like the Chitika love fest by many bloggers is screetching to a halt. If you're using Chitika, be prepared - you may be asked to bend over and take one for the team...

I knew chitika was a beta program when I signed up about a month ago. However, that doesn't mean I have to sit around for two months before getting the results of a perplexing audit, during peak season for my site, wondering if I'll take a loss because I replaced AdSense with chitika code.

Beta for them is to work out problems. Beta participation for me is to see if a product works and if I feel comfortable with it.

With AdSense, I know every day where I stand with them. When chitika gets things worked out, I'll consider increasing their presence again at my site.

But if other website owners keep bailing, I'm not even counting on getting paid and wonder if chitika can survive. I do hope they succeed and get their act together without alienating publishers because I like their product.
