SATA Raid cards - 11/18/2005 16:17:52
Okay, so my current MOBO has 2 existing SATA ports running 2 X WD 80GB SATA HDD's. (Striped together for the dreamy creamy speedyness) The MOBO I will be buying next has 4 X SATA ports. So if I have four drives striped together in 2 pairs that gives me essentially 2 HDDs. Now, I like to have 3 drives, one for OS & progs, one for my web related stuff and another for my media. So, if I buy a 2 port SATA card I could get my third pair of drives running. Now, are you restricted to only using one SATA raid card (thus meaning you have to get a 4 port or 8 port version) or can you have more than one and run more drives that way?

I can't tell you what to get, since I have no clue what is decently priced in the UK. In the US, if I was going to get a raid card, I would get a used $300+ card. Something like this is pretty good. quote:
Now, are you restricted to only using one SATA raid card - You are restricted to the number of PCI slots available. I suggest you take a look at an 8 sata port motherboard that has raid. Usually it is 4 sata ports (300mb/s), and then 4 more sata ports (also 300mb/s).

I wouldn't ever buy a $15 2 port raid card. Goodluck, I'm sure we'll see ya back in another month, wondering why your hard drives are having issues.

I even switched from Seagate drives to Western Digital drives, just for their SecureConnect connections. I can't comment on that specific model, but you might want to do some research on it.

I haven't every had a problem. I think they look better than the standard red cable too. I had a seagate drive that just didn't like the standard sata cable. I decided to move to a WD raptor from that seagate drive, and never had a connection problem at all. I'm sure I just got a bad drive, but knowing that I will have a secure connection, makes me feel better. It isn't needed, but if you don't mind a few bucks, it is a small investment. Every drive I have is connected by a WD SecureConnect cable. I think I got them for like $8 shipped/ea, which is pretty good.

Taz, I just realized that the card you linked to earlier is NOT a raid controller card. It is just a standard card that allows yout to connect 2 more sata connectors. So that will be perfectly fine for connecting two additional sata drives. I thought it also did raid, hence the title of the post, and the discussion lol.

Well if you need a raid card (to mirror/stripe drives, etc.) that card won't work.
