403 publish issues- help! - 11/20/2005 18:31:19
I am a new user here, so if this has been addressed, or I'm not following forum rules in the way I approach this problem, please go easy on me...

I have used Microsoft FrontPage to publish my website for the past year and a half with no troubles. I'm not sure what version of FP I have (how can I find that out?)

Recently, when I try to publish, the site begins to load and then I get an error message that says "The server could not complete your request. Please contact your web server administrator to make sure that the server has the Front Page server extensions or Share Point Team Services from Microsoft installed." When you click on the "Details" tab, this is the error message:

"Forbidden 403 You don't have permission to access /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. "

I have been fighting back and forth with the support team at my hosting company for weeks. They have tried all sorts of things and can't solve the problem. They are starting to insist that it's a software problem on my end. I don't know how that can be since I've published my site the same way for almost two years now without any significant changes.

Quirky things of note: Sometimes a portion of my changes go through, sometimes not. Either way, the publish never finishes and I end up with the error message. Please note this is not a Windows Firewall problem. I've tried publishing with the Firewall disabled and still encounter the same error messages.

Also- I have tried editing/publishing the site two ways. First, by editing the site on my local machine, saving it, and then publishing. That doesn't work. So my secondary attempt has been to edit the live web by going to the site on the WWW, selecting "Edit with Microsoft FrontPage" from the File menu in my browser and inputting my username and password. This has not worked either. The error messages I receive are the same with either method.

The only thing that is not consistent is WHEN the error message pops up. Sometimes it's after the page has almost completely loaded. At other times it happens IMMEDIATELY after I enter my user name and password (before any type of file transfer begins). And every once in a while (about every 10-20 tries) the website publishes without incident.

Any thoughts or help you can suggest is much appreciated. My apologies for the lengthy post. I figure the more info I put out there, the more quickly I might find a solution.

By the way, here is a list of the things the support folks at my server have tried:

Resetting permission of the author.exe in the frontpage insallation.

Reinstalled FrontPage for my domain.

Reinstalled the extensions on the server to confirm that there are no permission issues in the Frontpage files, and copied the auther.exe to the _vti_aut directory.

Reinstalled frontpage extensions on the server and republished again.

They insist that because they can publish without issue, that the problem is on my end. Grrrrrr...frustration.

I've no idea about the technical bits, but I had a similar problem with my old host's tech support when I was finding my site was down half the time (which eventually turned out to be a DNS issue) but for weeks they insisted there wasn't a problem (taking days to respond to my support requests) and they could see it okay, so the problem must be at my end. In the end I switched to a different host.

Hi and welcome.

That sounds like an Apache error and would suggest the permissions are not right for you to access but if it works sometimes and not others and you haven't done anything in between then it's odd.

I had a quick hunt around and found a few possibles. You are on a Unix host? Try this........

What is the URL of the site? You can check to see whether the FPSEs are actually running properly here

If none of these apply then type

Forbidden 403 You don't have permission to access /_vti_bin/_vti_aut/author.exe

into the Google search bar and you'll be spoiled for choice.
