Problem in some browsers - could you try it? - 9/7/2001 20:24:00
I would really appreciate peoples help with this.

Here are two order forms:
http://www.workingandliving.com/buybooks/
http://www.workingandliving.com/buyaccess/subscribe.shtml

In both cases they work fine in Netscape 4.7, not sure about 6.

They work in most versions of IE 4 and 5 but in the occasional version, including my version of IE 5, the SSL links are not working at all - ie the links to the stylesheet, to the images and to the script.

If you initiate an order you are passed to the secure server and that is when things start to go wrong.

I do not know if this has anything to do with the script that is processing the order form, I suspect not but would welcome any suggestion anyone might have might have as to why some browsers would cough at the SSL links and not others.

Also if people could try to start an order and let me know what browser versions they are using and whether it is working for them.

I found this which may be relevant but I have no clue what it means. Anyone care to translate? Do users need to fix this or is it a server thing? Though it seems only to refer to IIS, which I am not using.

This Knowledgebase Articel

I have also noted that when I disable ssl3 in Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Security all is ok.

This strikes me as a host problem. MMMM.

Hi, Katherine -

Wonderful site.

I'm missing the corporatelogo.gif on the sercure server in both IE 5.0 and NN 4.7. Everything else is fine.

Opera doesn't show a broken image or an error, but there isn't an image there. (surprise - opera's more forgiving)

Side note: I did notice that most of the text hyperlinks are pointing to the IP address instead of the domain.

None of that seems to be related to the problem you posted, though.

Linda

It looks pretty good to me also - using IE 5.5. All except 1 missing graphic in the top logo area on the shopping cart page. Seems to show up again on the Shipping Info page.

Also, does not seem to be related to your problem....

With NN 6.1 after placing the order and clicking the "Next" button I get the following error message...

I fixed the image thing - have been meaning to do that.

Also sorted the links going to the IP address.

Thanks for your help. Yikes Rian, why on earth does NN 6.1 do that? You were coming from an authorised URL.

Oh well. Onwards.

Rian would you mind trying that again if you have time?

I am hoping it was just that I was working on those pages when you last tried.

We are using this script for the poll:
http://www.cgi-world.com/poll_manager.html

There is a really nice free version also here:

Katherine-

Worked fine for me in IE 5.50 (latest edition before 6). With so many versions of browsers, it's getting tough to be perfect. I was checking sites on my next door neighbor's MAC and was surprised at all the problems with many sites (some were big commercial sites too). I go for 95%, life's too short. I also try and keep it as simple as the customer will let me to keep the browser issues to minimum.

Thanks Rian.

I gather from the author of the script that that is a known NN 6.1 thing with some secure servers, I have altered the script to tkae account of it....so....if you have another chance??

I guess I may have to accept that it does not work in some browsers.

I tracked the problem down in case anyone is interested. My version of IE has only supports 40-bit encrytption. The SSL on the server uses 128-bit so my browser chokes.

I am relieved. It is not my fault it is Microsoft's.
