My intranet site had been running smoothly for months. All I ask of the IT people is to not touch anything. Unfortunately, they don't listen. Anyone know what causes this dilemma:

I can access my sites in FP without trouble if I use the DOS path, ie, machinename\wwwroot\mysite\. However, if I enter http://ourintranetname/mysite/ I get prompted for my NT credentials, which are then rejected and the site won't open.

Sounds like theyve turned off anonymous access?
If youve got Frontpage access, then it could be a simple job to open up permissions from the security center there

Unfortunately, if I access the site as:

machinename\wwwroot\mysite, the server properties feature is unavailable.

I have a test page that writes the logon_user value and it still works, but no luck gaining access to the web via its http address.

I diito that. Have you tried Remote Desktop to it under your FP authoring account? :) :) I've been able to sneak in before that way. Shhhh.:)

Isn't anonymous access essentially the opposite of nt authenticated access? If so, this site has always been nt authenticated access.

Many times you need 'em both on. You need authentication turned on (usually) to use FP but most of the other stuff needs anonymous. This is how I setup one of my Intranet sites and I use authentication features as well as anonymous.

Believe it or not, I think our IT department is still runnng IIS 4. Not sure what they have done, but they have really messed up this one site. This is a development server so I do all my coding live on the server. Now anytime I edit a file and try to save I get the "Server error: Cannot rename file.asp" message. This site has subwebs that do not give me that message, so whatever they have done appears specific to this web. I think you are right on as far as needing to turn NT authentication and anonymous access on at the server, but now I need to get around this latest glitch. Life is so much better at home where I control the server. :)

Still running Windows NT 4 Server? :)

Only way to get round that thar glitch is to have the following info:

Server Name (usually same as network name)
Admin User ID of the server
Admin Password for the server.

Enter them in the login box (putername/username) should log you into the server machine via IIS with full access.

If that dont work, get a new server 7 IT department:)
