web publishing - 6/7/2001 20:05:00
I created a web about a year ago for my daughter's small business, and it needs a major overhaul. I'd like to leave it intact while I redesign the new one. And, I would like to publish the new one as I create it at the same URL but only viewable by my daughter for her approval.
When it is complete, I would like to replace the old with the new. Can this be done?
TIA for any guidance.

Probably the easiest way would be to make the new one a subweb of the old one until it is complete.

Sandy: Thank you for responding. I am not clear on what a subweb is. If you can spare me the time, I would appreciate more definitive help. Would it have a home page with the name index.htm or default.htm? If so, would this conflict with the existing web home page?
Assuming I knew how to designate a subweb, how would I replace the old with the new? Would I simply publish the new web overwriting the old?

Create a folder called - say - new site - in folders view. Then right click it and select - convert to web. Set up your new site naming all files as they will be in your new web, including index.)

I get a bit hazy on the next bit but your best bet, I think, is to publish 'test' to a new section of your hard drive to make sure it's working properly - then publish it up to the server (choosing the 'overwrite all files' option.

The other possibility would be to delete the files in your main web and move all the test files out of the sub-web into the main web and publish from there. (Run recalculate hyperlinks, and check your hyperlinks in 'reports view')

There MAY be a better way ...
