Accessibility Study of BBCi: problems faced by users wi... - 11/24/2005 7:05:38
http://www.bbc.co.uk/commissioning/newmedia/pdf/BBCi_Accessibility_Study_7-10-02.pdf BBCi is the BBC's (British Broadcasting Corporation) interactive web service that compliments its TV and radio. Interesting report on the problems faced by people with disabilities using the BBCi website. The report focuses on the BBCi site, but also gives some good advice on what makes an accessible and useable website. quote:
In general, each site in the high compliance group has the following characteristics: • The site allows the user to select their preferred text size; • The site can be viewed clearly by those with colour deficient vision; • Colour is used redundantly; • Moving text is avoided, or where used it freezes to allow ease of reading; • The site uses a clear legible font; • There is sufficient contrast between text and background colours; • The page has a logical tab order through all screen elements; • Each page has a descriptive title; • All sections of text of more than two lines are left aligned; • The site avoids blinking and flickering; • The site uses common web conventions. quote:
In general, each site in the low compliance group has the following characteristics: • The site does not allow the user to select their preferred text size; • The site does not use a clear legible font; • Non-text elements do not have text equivalents; • Pages do not have a logical tab order through all screen elements; • The site does not use common web conventions; • The site uses pop-up windows inappropriately. The report also highlights the importance of not only following accessibility guidelines, but also usability testing: quote:
accessibility guidelines, no matter how comprehensive, can never be a substitute for testing with users with disabilities. It makes very interesting reading, particularly the comments made by disabled testers on actually using the site.

It could be a business opportunity; Assemble a panel of people of various ages and disability profiles then offer "real life" accessibility testing and start your own independent certification program. It would be more meaningful than the wai123 etc excellent idea! I have a friend who built a huge business with mock jurys and then got into web site usability - but not with the disability angle....

There's already a company in Australia doing that. I'll look for them and post their link here. Edit: Here's one of them, not the one I was thinking of though http://www.hiser.com.au/world/consult/access.htm
