Now then, this might seem like a silly question but.. Having downloaded a particular music file, I find that instead of the usual 128 or 192kb/sec, this one plays at 32kb/sec, and of course, no sound comes out... I have downloaded about a million new codecs (OK, slight exaggeration there) and countless players (Real, iMesh,DivX, Winamp etc) but none seems to be able to play these files. Does anyone know what they are and what the problem might be? [8\|]

If as I suspect you have been using a dodgy p2p service it is most likely a dummy blank file put up by that vile organisation the RIAA to discourage illegal downloads. They are nearly all 32kbs; some are blank, some have snatches of music in the middle of the silent file, others have a voice saying "you're screwed" and the sound of a toilet flushing. The best advice is to ignore 32kbs files or any file that appears to download too fast.

Thanks for the reply there - I have not heard of the RIAA coming up with an idea like that. Yes, you're right, it is a p2p sharing service (Kazaa), and I know opinion differs on these things, but I have been using the same provider since the death of Napster (and I share mine too) and it is only recently that this has started to happen. So the RIAA is cunning enough to set up lots and lots of different dummy users just to confound us then? Thats wicked....... Has anybody else had the same problem?

It's more the artists/artists companies that do it. As soon as a new track by one of their bands comes out they flood P2P networks with bogus files in an attempt to make it difficult to get the file you are actually after. Why bother with a track at 32kbs anyhoo, the quality would be pretty naff that low. I have a 192kbs threshold, anything less than that and I wouldn't get out of bed to click download.

True; I wouldnt bother downloading anything at less than 128, but the comments attached to many of these files say that they are of 128 quality and better, only to find that when downloaded they play at 32kb, and a file which was typically 3-4 meg in size has a playing time of about 15 minutes. Does this fit the dummy file scenario?

Another interesting point; whilst I appreciate that new songs may be 'protected' in this way (and I have seen some new stuff), the file I was downloading is a 20 year old Steve Winwood song........cant find a kosher version anywhere.....

As I said, I know opinion differs on these things, and I actually pay a subscription fee, but the question is simply this: Is there an mp3 format that I do not know about or is there another reason why this happens? It is a technical enquiry, thats all. The morals are not in question here.

Fair enough. Point taken and understood. Would you be able to explain what makes the difference between legal and illegal downloads? As I said earlier, I pay a subscription fee for mine and was under the impression that this made the difference. This is not so?

Kazaa brings the files to you from other users of the program, regardless of whether or not they pay the subscription fee. The sources of the files are not legit, therefore making the file illegal. Places like iTunes have paid for the right to distribute the songs, and you pay per track that you download. Unlike Kazaa where you pay for te program, NOT the files. Kazaa is a fatal legality

Wouldn't a specialised music/mp3/download forum be far better equipped to handle your enquiry? [sm=ask.gif]
