home server with email on XP Home - 11/28/2005 13:55:26
Hi,
Is there a way to setup an pop3/SMTP email handler on a home server so that my I can send emails through my sight?
Computer info <if you need it>
[XP Home]
[Apache 2.0.55 <server porgram>]
[does not FPSE yet]

I think your big issue will be whether your ISP blocks Port 25 or not. Most home ISP's will block port 25 and hence your SMTP won't work.
There are several mail packages/scripts available but I'm also not sure XP *Home* will support it. You may need XP Pro.

If the problem is that port 25 is blocked, port 26 might be open. I deal with people all the time who can't send mail, by opening port 26 it fixes the problem about 90% of the time.

If you went with ISS on XP PRo, you should be able to use CDOSYS.
If not, I'd check ASPMail, ASPEmail, or possibly JMail. Out of those 3, I'd use ASPEmail since it's a freebee and works quite adequately. It's also quite popular and there are quite a few resources for support help.

sorry to drag this back up, but are there any known "safe" ports that i could use that my router¹ or isp² wont shoot down?
¹my router is cheap and just because it says its allowing traffic on a port doesn't mean anything
²my isp is verizon and my service is the 768kbps small business connection (i know thats no good 4 a pc used as a server)

My verszon business dsl doesn't block port 25, that's one of the reasons I pay extra for a business dsl connection.
My web host, a large windows host, offers port 8889 as an alternate port to their smtp servers. It's up to the smtp server to decide what, if any, alternate ports to listen on.

i am not currently in control of which ISP i use (i am 'borrowing' my connection currently) and the person who does have control ignores my pleas to change ISPs because she thinks that the connection is "just fine" even though this 768kb connection rarely makes 90kb...

You should pay special attention to what Doug is saying righ there. There are providers that have services to get you around some of those port issues. Here is one that is rather popular:
