A few more details on precisely what the problem is might help a tad :)

OK - Sorry!

Go to www.provenceaccommodation.com and click on one of the pictures. Then click on the Booking Form button, which will take you to the form in question.

When you submit the form, it tries to find http://www.provenceaccommodation.com/--WEBBOT-SELF--

This is the problem!

I have done the following as suggested on http://www.msfrontpage.net/fp/pnortbots.htm but this still does not work.

The following is the work around for the _derived/nortbots.htm:

1. Open your web site "live" over the Internet (these steps will not work on a local version).
2. Open form/page in FP Editor,
3. Look at page in HTML view.
4. Remove the following line of code from the page: onSubmit="location.href='_derived/nortbots.htm';return false;"
5. Save file

this was beneath those instructions you are following:
quote:

NOTE: Microsoft's latest version of the FrontPage 98 server extensions fixes this problem. If you are experiencing this problem, ask your ISP / WPP to upgrade their extensions to the latest.

I suspect they are a bit outdated. the web bot is part of fp handling forms for you - why exactly are you trying to remove it?

I'm trying to remove it because it goes to a derived folder and doesn't work if it is there.

I'm stuck with my ISP so can't exactly ask them to upgrade??

AMysticWeb (aka Micheal Smith) is an expert on FP forms. Here is his website, but I'm sure he'll be along shortly to assist.

I hope so!

My ISP has just confirmed that latest FP extensions are installed, so that can be ruled out.

Hi Tim,

Welcome to OutFront!

Isn't this a fine mess Kitka has gotten me into. Just kidink.

First off file:///H:My WebsProvenceform.txt is not a proper file path. WebsProvenceform.txt would be if and only if you have saved a blank text file named WebsProvenceform to the _private folder. In this case the path would be _private/WebsProvenceform.txt This is where it should be to offer some protection for the users input.

Almost every FP error can have roots in form properties or extensions. The webbot self error and page cannot be displayed point to extensions.

The _derived/nortbots appearance in the source of the published form would indicate missing or broken extensions. FTP, server resets and server burps can break the extensions. Mine break frequently because of the number of forms on my site.

To clarify, the following are FrontPage Form Requirements

The FrontPage form relies on three primary ingredients when using the Send to: option for email and file. This applies to Guestbook, Search Form, Discussion Web etc.

1. The FPSE (FrontPage Server Extensions) must be enabled on the server.

2. You must publish with FrontPage to http location. Don't use FTP as this can break or corrupt the extensions.

3. Use of .htm or .html page extension.

Additionally, in order to send results to email, the SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) must be set up on the server to send form mail.

I have seen a work around mentioned regarding the _derived/nortbots notation, and have offered something a link to similar, but I have heard no feedback that it ever worked for anyone. Plus this fix supposedly only works live on a remote server.

At this point I would reinstall the extensions or turn them on from the site control panel. If the host needs to do this for you then alert them to the need for this.

Be sure to use the built in "Publish Web" function from FrontPage to publish to the server.

The other thing I would mention is that you are sending to an external email address. If it comes through, fine. Yahoo mail is compatible with formmmail, some aren't.

If receiving the email becomes a problem, send to a site mail address and forward to your Y email.

Micheal,

What can I say??? A big thank you. As normal, I look far too deep into the problem and miss the absolutely obvious answer - which is publishing using FP and not via FTP.

I have since published the form using FP and bob is finally my uncle. Just got to get the damn thing to email me now!

Cheers

As you are obviously knowledgeable and so quick at replying - I wonder if you could help me with the next step??

The for now submits and confirms by a default page. I have set it to email me, but this doesn't work. When you edit in FP, it says that the form can not be configured to send results by email. bla bla bla contact ISP???

Yes - it asks if you want to remove, which I said no, but I'll try again right now and report back.

 Hi Tim,

Ok, so the good news is you have a working form.

The bad news is, you get no email.

The "Disk based web" message is just another way for MS to remind us the form must be published to a server with the extensions installed. Always click no, as Kitka indicated, unless youcan receive the results via telepathic means.

Before I accuse the server of not having send mail configured for form mail, a couple of things.

1. You are not sending to site mail, which is the best option, as some servers won't send formmail to external addresses. In this case, forward to your personal email. Sending to site email is something I mentioned in my first post. Many times this is the best option e.g. something like webmaster@provenceaccommodation.com or forms@provenceaccommodation.com
Just be sure to create the address in question.

2. Maybe your email program won't accept email. In this case, try Yahoo mail. I am an AOL user and AOL mail is notorious for not receiving formmail. I think it treats all of it as spam.

Hey Tim,

No Problemo, but I was thinking about a Yellow Hummer for Christmas.

Glad it is working for you.
