Hi, I have been trying to upgrade my computer with XP office, but for some reason its giving me problems. I shutdown my computer and try and boot with the CD but it stops at "Checking Hardware Configuration Please Wait..." I tried this 5x before i decided to try it while my computer is already running. When I try this it says "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD." Is there a way around this message, or another way to install it?

Sorry - just clarify what you are installing? Are you installing office or a new OS ? Id so, what is your current OS and the OS you wish to install?

Sorry, I have XP Home as the current OS and I am trying to install XP Pro as the new OS.

If you're trying to install Pro over Home the install disk should give you the option of a clean install or an upgrade (preserving existing information and files) <edit> If you're downgrading from Pro to Home then you'll need to overwrite the installation and you'll need the full version of XP Home... an upgrade disk won't work.

It never gets to that point, it stops short as soon as I try to install. I was wanting to wipe the hardrive and install it like new but I am nervous about blindly doing things like that so i tried it on a blank spare drive i have laying around and it has the same problem of stopping at the "Checking Hardware Configuration Please Wait..." screen

Do you need to backup or save any of the files on your hard drive before you zap it? There are several utilities that you can freely download that will let you do that. Are you using a full install disk for XP Home or is it an upgrade disk? Any particular reason you're wanting to downgrade?

The version of XP Home come with the computer and already has the latest service pack and security updates and the cd with XP Pro is untouched, that's why I call it downgrading and I think that is what my computer is trying to say when the error message "Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD." comes up. Should I get a newer version of Pro? or would i still have the same problem...

You'll still have the same problem So are you trying to reinstall XP Home using an XP Pro disk? Does your system know to boot to the CD? Have you ever gone into your system BIOS before (at bootup) and change the boot order of your hardware? If your machine came with a "rescue" or "recovery" disk (or set of disks) you can use that to restore it to the original condition... basically start over from scratch the way it was when you got it. Otherwise you should be able to put in the XP Pro disk and upgrade to XP Pro. You might first want to do a search for the Windows XP boot floppies. There is a set of 6 floppy disks that you may need to use to boot the computer and get the ball rolling with the installation CD. You can freely download them over the Net. I would get those (search Google) and boot to the first one, follow the prompts. That should get you into the CD and let you overwrite the hard drive. If you can't get that to work, and don't need any of the files currently on your PC, I can point you to some utilities that will erase the hard drive partitions, start over with a clean slate. (And people complain that Linux is hard to install... Windows ain't no walk in the park either [8\|])

You should be able to open the CD and select Install. To upgrade from home to Pro is fairly painless. It will ask if you want to overwrite or keep files, but should allow you to upgrade. I would recommend a full overwrite, don't keep anything... If it's the full version of XP Pro you can wipe your drive clean and use the boot floppies (or try booting directly to CD.. at that point there isn't any OS to confuse it) if it's the XP Pro upgrade disk don't wipe your HDD clean because you'll have to have Windows on it to qualify for the upgrade. If you can't get the disk to work properly I would call MS customer service and walk through it with them. What you're doing should work...

I have found that to be true when using many MS products, they "should" work, but they make no mention to the effort you have to put in to make them work... Oh well, I'm just complaining because this whole thing has made me grumpy. Anyway, thanks for all the help, maybe it'll get figured out maybe it wont I'll just have to wait and see....[sm=tongue.gif]
