WYSIWYG Editor for updating sites - 12/7/2005 11:36:26
More and more clients are wanting to update their sites themselves - especially in my target area - small businesses.
The problem with this is how do you allow them access to their sites without them messing up your lovely accessible, valid XHTML strict code.
Assuming that you are aiming to build a customer-updateable site and using a database to build it on - you'll need some sort of form for the customer to enter/edit their pages. This turns out to be a problem because if you're going to allow the customer any sort of formatting then you're going to need to add a wysiwyg editor to the update page. The problem is that these wysiwyg editors produce code similar to a HTML book stuck through a shredder and then emptied into a strong wind - anything could happen!
I've come across a javascript based WYSIWYG editor which can be added to any text area on your clients' sites which actually seems to produce reasonable code. It does add the odd & n b s p ; in if you're not careful - but given the rubbish alternatives, I can live with that!
It just needs a call to the .js file in the HTML page and that's it - any textarea on the page is turned into a wysiwyg editor.

The client will need to have Javascript enabled in their browser to use it.

Interesting question-
I also have more and more customers wanting to update themselves, but am not using a database to build on. I will be interested in seeing what people come up with as I am frankly stumped.
On the other hand just picked up a check to fix a site I did 2 years ago that the customer has been updating. They went out and purchased FrontPage and were doing okay for a while....and then you know

Was hoping you would see this thread..remember a similar thread a few weeks ago maybe, but couldn't find it.
Do you know if any of these will work for our cousins....the Mac users?
You may remember the thread last week about the person who thought I was to expensive? Now he wants me to do site and he will update content. He is a Mac person...so that might make it a little more difficult.

I have the same experience with some of my customers. They mess up and then I fix their contribution to an otherwise acceptable site.
With some clients, I have suggested they use Contribute from Macromedia. Some are willing to fork out the extra cash in order to be able to change some text or pics. I, however, make it clear to them that if they mess up, I will charge them to correct it.

I'm not sure if Contribute would still mess up my nice valid, handcoded, accesible site - plus most of my clients wouldn't be able to afford it...

Think I am going to download the free trial and check it out. Single license version is only $149 so that's not so bad. The 6 license version is quite expensive.
Looks like it should work for me with my Mac client and says it will work with Frontpage.
