Front Page 2003 Publishing Problems - 12/7/2005 17:24:56
Hi, This is my 4th forum to post this problem on, seems nobody can help me. My web sites are hosted by PowWeb. I have FPSE installed. My sites were designed on FP2002 but only recently upgraded to 2003 (and beginning to regret it). One of my sites has become totally inaccessible. I apparently didn't upload it using FP's publish option (the only instructions I had were to ftp it using PowWeb's ftp). Since upgrading whenever I try to upload I get one of 3 errors: Unable to open 'http://www.weidnerpainthorses.com' Service Error: The web server at http"//the above site does not appear to have SharePoint Sevice installed. OR The folder '/weidnerpainthorses.com' does not exist on the remote web location. Would you like a folder created at that location? OR Unable to open 'http://weidnerpainthorses.com' 1.The web server may not have FPSE's installed. 2.The web server may be temporarily out of service. 3.If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect. 4.An error may have occured in the web server. NONE of the above applies to my problem. I've uninstalled and reinstalled FrontPage, I even started a new site and tried to upload it, with the same results. I've looked at every setting in FP but even the Remote Site Properties Box will not 'keep' any of my changes, just keeps reverting back to the original URL I typed in, which is incorrect. Someone mentioned firewall restrictions, but one of my sites will upload the other will not, so I don't think that's the issue. Does anyone here have any ideas? I'm at my wit's end! Brenda

Brenda, The usual cause for this is a problem with FrontPage Server Extensions, but to be more specific, people usually forget to make sure they are installed. It does appear you have the FrontPage Server Extensions installed, but they might need to be repaired. FPSE: FrontPage/5.0.2.263 Because you say: quote:
I've uninstalled and reinstalled FrontPage, I even started a new site and tried to upload it, with the same results. If you have any firewalls or proxies, make sure they are turned off or disabled & try to publish it again; if it works, then it is a problem with your connection. Then try to FrontPage Publish using another computer. If it works, then report back. If it doesn't work, contact your host and tell them to get things working. And if your host can't resolve your issue, move on to another host.

Hi, I'm reasonably sure that the problem is in my FP files. The tech at PowWeb got the publish option to work fine on his computer. I did receive advice to download a program called FP Cleanup. I've run it, but still haven't gotten rid of the incorrect ftp URL that FP seems to be storing and insists on trying to upload to. I'm waiting instructions to remove some files in the registry. Hope this works!! Thanks for your advice! Brenda

I didn't get a chance to try it on another computer, but I did try it on another server (lycos tripod) and I still can't get the publish option to work there even tho I have FP enable there too.

OK, tried it on another computer and it works fine. It's got to be in the setttings on my computer. I don't know what else to change other than the regedit (frontpage explorer) files. Any other place I can go?

Try running the Internet Explorer repair on your system. Or, you can try the Office or Front Page repair on the workstation. Rick Universal4

OK, at the risk of sounding like a dummy, how would I do either one? (btw, my FP was separate from my Office software so assume it would be somewhere in the FP program?)

Sorry I haven't logged in here for a bit, and hopefully you have figured this out. Have you tried the FP repair? If you need to run an IE repair, go to Add Remove Programs in the Control Pane, and choose IE. If it is not in the list, you can also reinstall IE from either Microsoft downloads site or from your Office or FP Install CD. If you install from the CD or repair from Add/Remove, be sure to visit Windows Update afterward. This will often help. Rick Universal4

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I did try the Front Page repair, but nothing's changed, I still cannot access the FPSE method to publish. I have not had the chance to reinstall Internet Explorer. (if I recall, it takes a long time to download). I will give that a try, though. Thanks. Brenda

Not sure if you ever found a resolution to this problem or not but thought maybe you could give me a lead in the right direction. I have FP2003 and am also trying to publish to POWWEB. I have installed the extensions on powweb - no luck, uninstalled and reinstalled FP2003 - no luck, and have now ran the FP repair utility as suggested by other users. No luck. I work in an agency and was going to use this as a website for a non-for-profit coalition. I am able to publish fine from home but not within the agency i am employed with. I took the problem to another computer within the agency and still get the same error: Unable to open: 'http://mysite.powweb.com'. Server error: The web server at "http://mysite.powweb.com" does not appear to have Windows SharePoint Services installed. Possible causes: 1. The web server may not have the FrontPage Extensions installed. 2. The web server may be temporarily out of service. 3. If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect. 4. An error may have occurred in the web server. I have contacted POWWEB support and explained the issue to them to see if they had any ideas and am not getting very far. Any other ideas or suggestions would be great! Thx!

Hi, I never did get an answer to my problem and just decided if it worked via ftp, that's what I'd have to do. Now PowWeb has changed over to a new platform and I see they're still migrating sites over. Mine's moved and they say you can't publish with an ftp anymore. (unless it's theirs? Don't really know) . I now publish to a different address....... ftp://ftp.mydomainname.com It's still working OK, so I guess if it's not broke?....... Would that work on yours? Or maybe you've tried that method. Guess it depends on whether or not your site's been moved. Sorry I'm not more help! If you do get it all figured out, let me know!! Thanks! Brenda

Actually my problem is not with PowWeb, when they tried to upload to my site using the FP Server Extensions, it worked fine. I even opened an account with a freebie site and tried to publish to it. Still wouldn't work. The problem is in my own computer.....setting, restriction....something. Somebody suggested that I uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer (which I haven't done yet). One of these days maybe I'll find the time but things are working OK with the site, so I'm being lazy.
