I was wondering if having two domain name with identical content would have any impact on search engine rankings. Does it matter if they share the same IP address or not?

I wanted to know because I thought I heard that you could be penalized for it but I see places like Aprilaire that has about 6 different domain names with identical content (near as I can tell). And they don't seem all that penalized.

Yes. You can trip a duplicate content filter. Notice I said *can* trip a filter and not *will* trip a filter.

Which competitive phrases are they ranking for?

A penalty doesn't mean your site will be tossed from the Google index. Rather, there is a dampening effect on your sites ability to rank.

They rank 5th for 'humidifiers' but I suppose it is understandable. There is only so much you can penalize a place like Aprilaire when it is the first brand name that comes to mind when people think of humidifiers.

As for the second part of the question, does it matter if they are the same IP addresses or different ones? I am just asking because I don't do the domain names and I recently noticed that even though I publish to one spot both domain names are affected. So I assume that they have the same IP address.

I knew that they got the extra .biz domain name but it didn't occur to me that both would be updated when I publish. If we drop the extra domain name will any penalty that may be there be removed eventually?

Try to have seperate IP addresses. If you have multiple domains and they all have the same content (like yours) you are at risk. Nothing may happen, but if it does it can take up to 6 months to come out from under any penalty.

In order for Google to find duplicate content they need to find links going to the dupe site. ROS (run of site) links using the same link text across multiple sites all pointing to both the dupe and the original could help speed up the process of duplicate detection.
