Cooling Fan on Vid Card not working? - 12/13/2005 13:35:19
I'm not very good with computers but I recently had a 9800 pro. Few days ago my screen just went black and it kept happening so I was guessing the vidcard went. When I had that card install I noticed the fan was not spinning. So when I got my new vidcard in the mail. Installed it. On the comp for a day. Fan was spinning and the next day my screen went black again and I notice the fan not spinning. Anyone know the problem?

The fan may only spin when it needs to, not positive...

I would think it unusual that your vid chip would be overheating during normal use... even if the fan wasn't working. It could be an issue with your motherboard or power supply.

I would have recommended changing the card out, but you've already done that so it must be something else.

Have you updated all the drivers and such?

Yes I've updated the drivers for the video card. The vid card I am using right now is a Radeon X800XT and came with 5.12 Catalyst driver.

The only time I have major problems with screen black outs is when I play my games.

That makes a bit more sense...

How about some system details?

Motherboard?
Processor?
Power supply?
How much RAM?
etc

version of Windows? (If XP, do you have SP2 installed?)

It sounds like either the card is getting bottlenecked at the pipeline and crashes your AGP video, or you have something buggy in your motherboard.

But I'm using the WAG (Wild A** Guess) method to diagnose :)

Well the computer is a gateway. I'm not sure what motherboard this uses and power supply but I see an output of 160watts on the label. 1gig of ram, Pentium 4, Seagate 40gig harddrive and a Radeon X800XT vid card.

The only thing I have changed on this computer was the video card and added two 512 ram.

I have ran the 9800pro vid card for about a year with no problems until a couple of weeks ago when I started noticing sudden black outs. Not often though til months after then it started to happen alot. Thats when I changed the vid card and next day after install and also playing my game w/o no problems it happened again. Right now I'm feeling the video card and it's pretty hot and the fan has not once came on.

160 watt power supply is WAAAAY underpowered for that video card. I would guess ATI and Nvidia would both tell you for their respective high end cards you need at least a 250 watt power supply if not higher.

Didn't even know PSUs went down to 160 watts lol. Make sure the video card is pressed in firmly.

Depending on what other things you're using (DVD drive, CD drive, etc) that could be your problem.

It could also be why the fan is not spinning.

Have you noticed it happen when your HDD spins up? That can cause your system to crash if there isn't enough power for everything.

Luckily the power supply is a fairly inexpensive fix... for $50 to $70 you can probably have a shiny new one installed. Or less if you feel up to tackling it yourself.

For $30 you can probably get one that's a decent upgrade from <200w

(Gateway (and Dell in the past) used bare minimum PSY to cut costs)

Cool. Thanks for helping me find the problem with this situation I have right now. Im leaning towards the power supply considering its only ****ing 160 watts. Way to go Gateway. I just order a 500 watts Power Supply from newegg.com for a very good price, $30. This should come in soon and hopefully get this up and running correctly. Thanks again for the replies.

A lower watt PSU from a better manufacturer is better than a higher watt PSU from a bad manufacturer.

engz... you may want to rethink buying that $30 psu. From experience I can tell you what a bad psu can do to your system. I've had clients' systems that have completely been destroyed due to a lower grade psu and the end result is not pretty. Do yourself a favor... spend the extra $30-$50 and buy yourself a better PSU... think of it this way... a lower end psu is to your computer what a fuel mixture of 1 part gas & 1 part water is to your car. If you don't want this vid card to go the same way I would highly recommend that you grab something a little better from say Antec for around $60-$80. Just my 2 cents.
