Can anyone tell me exactly what Web Hosting means? Do you always need a host and does it improve your web site in terms of search engine ranking?

Think of your website as a poster and web hosting as the billboard. Unless you use freespace offered by some ISPs you must have webspace which you hire from a webhost to allow your website to be seen. No web hosting, no website.

Thanks, I do have free space on AOL and I also have purchased a domian name.

I have found though that I am unable to use the domain name direct as all the search engines require the use of you actual site name upon submission. Consequently the AOL members url shows up on all the seach engines instead of the actual domain name (this works when entered via a direct search but obviously the AOL name does not look as professional)

Would purchasing a hosting package overcome this and how do you know how much you need to purchase? I have no idea what size my size would be classed as?

The kind of hosting plan depends on how large your site is (the amount of disk space you'll need), how popular it's likely to be (the amount of bandwidth you need) and whether you're using databases etc. (and you may need FP extensions if you're using FP components).

There was a thread around here ealier this week about using FP to find the total size of your site - a search should find it. There's also an excellent article about choosing a host here on OF - click on the blue bar right at the top of the page 'Tutorials/FAQ' - which explains all the ins and outs of hosting.

Jane,

You might find the article Creating Your First Website very informative.
