Questions on Illustrator and Photoshop - 12/19/2005 21:02:08
It seems like illustrator is for creating web graphics - banners buttons, backgrounds etc.
Photoshop is for manipulating photos primarily.
Is my understanding correct? I am looking at upgrading my versions of each and am looking for feedback as far as what each program is best suited for.
Does anyone have any experience with the newest CS versions of PS and Illustrator?
If I want to upgrade which versions are worth upgrading too. I currently have PS v 5.5 and Illustrator 9.0
Thanks

You already have more graphic processing power than most developers on the planet. For web graphics you can do just as well using Paintshop or GIMP. I've even seen an amazing website done in Image Composer. Photoshop 5.5 is still a great piece of software. Overkill for web work. I liked 6 better but I think only because I used it a lot more.
I've only dabbled in Illustrator... I'm not blessed with the skill to do anything productive with it. I'm more comfy in an Adobe environment. Only because of the amount of time I spent there.
Either one will create fantastic graphics, both work with photos well. I would upgrade that one and leave the other for now. It really depends on which one you're most comfortable using.
It ain't the hammer, what matters is the shoulder that swings it.

I just got Photoshop CS2 and was using CS. CS2 introduced another product that comes in Photoshop called Bridge and it is awesome. Have to agree with Bobby that any version after 5.0 is better than what most people have.
Most of the new things that I have found in CS2 seem to be web oriented....especially in the ImageReady and Bridge side. I can't think of anything that you would need to do that would require Illustrator as far as web graphics go and would just go for that.
