custom 404 page? - 12/20/2005 17:05:41
I have a client who is using a shared host and FrontPage 2003 extensions and I have just finished redesigning their site. I had planned to use a .htaccess file for redirects and a custom 404 page, but I don't think FP allows a .htacess file to exist. Is there something in FrontPage adminstrator that'll allow for a custom 404 to be created? The client has a main web and 3 sub-webs and I don't want to change anything lest I break something by mistake.
I know absolutely nothing about FrontPage or Frontpage extensions so please forgive my ignorance!

FrontPage actually creates an .htaccess file in root directory itself, and often you can get away with a minor edit, without FP chucking a wobbly. Adding a custom 404 is usually one it is comfortable with. Adding mod_rewrite has it taking a fit and refusing to allow you to publish. But there are ways around it.
You can't do any real damage by test editing the current .htaccess. Don't touch any of the stuff placed there by FP, just add your custom 404 line underneath it, then save.
Then test it by trying to open the site live from within FP, or publish. If it works, well and good, if it doesn't, just edit .htaccess to remove the line you added, and test again to ensure that FP will allow you to open/publish the site.

301 is the code for a page or file which has been flagged as "moved permanently" and 404 is a simple "page or file not found" error.
If 301 is indicated, there is always a new location specified in the rule. Whereas if a 404 is returned, there is no redirection found/indicated by .htaccess

You might find the Custom Error page Generator tutorial helpful. I noticed it doesn't really go into much detail for the novice, but if you have any questions after reading that page, I will gladly make the changes so it will be more helpful for the next person with the same question.

By setting up the e-mail system, I have found and fixed MANY errors. But I agree, it isn't for everyone.
