Please Critique - Finally catching on to css I think?? - 12/22/2005 12:03:52
Seasons Greetings All! I have finally decided to "just do it" and delved into trying css. I have asked for a critique on my site before, but have really updated it, changed the layouts (it's still pink but that is "weddingy" as Jaybee stated.) Now that I have gone to the stylesheet and modified layout, I would greatly appreciate any opinions, comments, constructive critisisms on my site http://www.northumberlandbride.com/. Because I have "taken the plunge" so to speak, and am so excited about making the move to css, I have also designed a collegue's site and would greatly appreciate comments on this one as well: http://www.porthopemedicalcosmeticclinic.com/ (sorry if this should have been a post on it's own. Many many thanks in advance! Jennifer

That is really good. Very nice and tidy layout... The only thing that put me off weas the lack of padding around some of the text, It's ok on the main body but lower down the page where your thumbnails are is where I noticed this. Hope I've helped

Beautiful! I just finished doing a bridal shop site but the customer changed so much in it that I will not even include it in my portfolio. Your site is excellent! One question: how long did it take you to grasp CSS and how advanced in html were you before starting?

ORIGINAL: Mango Himself One question: how long did it take you to grasp CSS and how advanced in html were you before starting? I was also thinking about this... Because of what was said in the original post I expected far less. I am somebody who is just learning. This site makes you look very proficient UrlGurl.

This site makes you look very proficient UrlGurl. Thank you! Actually I have been working on (and off) since March of '04 trying to grasp css. I really struggled getting my site to look okay. I had read through dozens of tutorials, and leafed through some books, but could not exactly grasp the art of css. I was lucky enough to have a part time job through the summer and a brilliant co-worker who showed me hands on (which is the way I learn the best.) The site was originally all tables, and not set to any width, so it would stretch all out on a ws monitor. As for my coding abilities, I admit that my HTML is about average and I have gone back and forth between FrontPage, Dreamweaver and UltraEdit text editor. Most recently, I am back to Front Page as I really like the template option with editible areas it now has. I also must admit that I am still learning and I use TopStyle Pro for the css, which I find quite user friendly. Thank you all for the compliments!

Hi It looks very good - especially for a first effort. Only things I'd say is that you shouldn't use px for your font sizing - try messing around with %s instead (I use 100.01% on the body and around 76% for the text itself) - this is because IE won't allow users to resize the text if you use pxs and users should be able to make the text size bigger if necessary. Also - there's still quite a lot of presentational info hard-coded into the page that you could shift out to the external stylesheet - this'll make it easier if you want to fiddle around with the look or colours etc. I agree about needing a bit more padding just to give the text "room to breath" The other site is also really pretty looking too - Same points apply regarding font-sizing - pts are really a print font sizing method - stick with %s or possibly ems instead. Only other thing I'd mention is that I'd definitely include <label> tags on your form elements to make them more accessible. Both sites are throwing up a load of validation warnings but I couldn't see anything fatal - just a case of cleaning things up a bit.
