how to link html page to excel file? - 12/23/2005 14:54:01
This forum has been very helpful so Im back again to ask another question :)

We have these price lists in Excel format that we use every single day at work. I'd like to put them on our server so that our employees can have access to them by just going to that page and clicking on the link for the price list that is needed. There are so many price lists that we use that it tends to overwhelm everyone by the number of sheets that are open.

Heres a brief outline of what Im talking about.

www.domainname.com/yess/pricelists.htm (this is the page that the employees would go to to choose the price list they need)

On that page there would be links such as:

Price list for X product
Price list for Y product

Once we click on the link should I have the pricelists on an html page (by copying and pasting the data from xcel to html) or can I have them open up in excel?

I hope this makes sense :)

Thanks in advance for any responses.

yess

Yess,

Read an OutFront thread concerning this subject:
http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/m_225158/tm.htm

Notice that data base/copy/paste/linking options are discussed. IMO your situation, considering the number/frequency of price list changes, lends itself to the server side data base approach.

Bear in mind that, if you use linking method, all visitors must have Excel to open the linked file. No matter your approach, integrity of your pricing can only be maintained by constant updating including time stamping for each sheet.

A MS KB article concerning this subject can be found Here. I assume this applies to FrontPage versions 2000 and later.

If the worst comes to the worst and you do use linking instead of a database then users will not necessarily need to have Excel installed. Do a Google search for Microsoft Excel Viewer and offer it as a download on your site.

Rocket Boy,

Good Tip! I'd heard of the Power Point Viewer but not the Excel Viewer.

Download it Here
