migrating from static to database - 1/2/2006 18:07:52
I am about to completely rebuild a website that has more than five years of history in the search engines. I am going from a static site to a database-driven design (with search engine-friendly urls). I know that the new site will have completely different file names/urls than the old one. How should I go about making the switch so that visitors will still find the site from the search engines, but allow me to migrate in such a way that the new pages will eventually be spidered?
I know that I can use redirects from the old pages to the corresponding pages in the new design. But is there a better way, or perhaps something else I need to consider? Eventually the redirects might work against me with the search engines, considering that they may not follow a redirect link.

Im not that sure you have a whole lot to do. I mean, sure, the search engines wont see your old database but, if you have a SE-friendly site, then you have lots of relevant content. You wont have to worry about the switch. Just do what you are going to do and when the search bots come crawling about, they will see what has happened to your site.
Now, you might in fact loose a few ranking spots but that is just because the bots will think you dropped text. Dont let that worry you. Just make sure you are adding relevant content to your site.
