Wireless Connection Problem - 1/6/2006 17:44:53
I'm trying to connect a laptop to a broadband connection using a wireless USB adaptor. I installed it the way the instruction manual said to. However, I still can't connect to the internet even though my computer can detect the wireless connection. I don't know a lot about internet connections so I'm not sure what the problem is. Thanks in advance for any help given.

Make sure that the drivers for your wireless card are installed. If you are not sure how to do that, you need to rightclick on the "My Computer" icon that is on your desktop, and goto "Properties", then select the "Hardware" tab, and then "Device Manager". Scroll down and look for anything with a yellow mark next to it. Reply with anything that has the yellow mark.

Thanks for the response. Nothing in that window appears to have a yellow mark. I've already tried resetting my router and reinstalling the device. The adaptor said it wasn't able to contact the DHCP server to renew my ip address so I also tried manually entering the ip addresses and DNS server values (192.168.1.10 for the ip address, 192.168.1.1 for the default gateway, and 192.168.1.1 for the preferred DNS server). I also tried using ping 127.0.0.1 in the command window, which came up with a response that it couldn't contact the DHCP server before I manually entered the ip addresses and came up with a positive response after I entered in the ip addresses. Either way, I still can't get on the internet. I just noticed that both my software menu and the wireless configuration status menu say that I'm connected, but both of them show the computer receiving 0 bytes of data. The amount of data being sent out is increasing, however. I don't know a ton about internet connections so I don't know if this information will help.

Try calling the support # for your wireless router.
