susu -> Computer Slowing down to a Crawl .. (1/7/2006 23:11:08)

Hello,

I have a 600 mhz computer (please don't laugh), but normally it is quite peppy and fast.. I do a Defrag and Disk cleanup every week or so. I have a 40 gig hardrive with 20 gig free space, I have 256 memory. I have windows xp pro. I don't know why my computer has been slowing down to a crawl lately, my computer hardrive space hasn't changed in 6 months, its always been the same. I delete the temporary internet stuff like say to do, but still my computer is running slow even off the internet. I ran a virus check but it is virus free. Can someone give me some suggestions "why" it has slowed down recently, beside throwing the pc in the trash. I would like to keep it for awhile. thanks, susu

256 meg of memory isn't a lot if you're running a lot of apps. I found a few months back mine was slowing down (then I realised I'd got loads of stuff running in the background that I could never be bothered to close down [:D]). Couple more sticks of RAM and I'm back to my former speedy self (well, PC is, dunno about me [:D]).

If you're not running many apps and nothing about your system has changed, and it sounds like you're doing all the sensible 'housekeeping stuff' it sounds like it could be malware/virus related. Which anti-virus are you using? All av's aren't the same (there have been some interesting debates about the pros and cons of the different ones around here over the months) - different anti-virus software will pick up different things. I run AVG, Spyware Guard, Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search & Destroy and No Adaware (I'm paranoid [;)]) - though i don't runs scans all at the same time otherwise they all pick each other up and don't play nicely.

There are loads of different ones out there, and many of them either have a free version (including AVG) or a free trial. It might be an idea to download one of them and see if anything turns up.

Hopefully someone'll be along soon who knows much more about these things than me, and while my eyes may be open, brain's not yet kicked in this early on a Sunday. [;)]

256 MB RAM is a bit low for Xp Pro fullstop, I wouldn't run it on anything less that 512MB....I have mine on 1GB

That happened to me some time ago and eventually I found the culprit to be Norton AV. Are you running Norton by any chance?

Susu, you don't say anything about checking for spyware. I would start there.
I use Ad-aware and Microsoft- anitspy. However, first thing I would do is to download the trial version of Spysweeper and run it. (Have purchased it for kid's computer, sooner or later will purchase it for office computer too.)

We had a guy donate a computer to our church who told me that it was shot. Turned out it had over 1100 spyware signatures on it. Once I ran all the spyware programs it works just fine. And yes, he was running the infamous Norton Ghost...
