jetzler -> Problem with uploading 425 error (1/11/2006 19:08:08)

Hello,
I have maintained 2 websites with Frontpage 2000 for some time now.
Last night I was doing a simple update and on one and everything was progressing normally during my upload until it seemed to take a while then it timed out with the following error.

FrontPage
425 could not open data connection to port # (port # was always different) operation timed out.

I did some research and see others have had this problem but I found no one had it with FrontPage.
Anyway I tried some of the ideas that came from reading. The main one being.
Use passive ftp checked in Internet options. It was so I tried it with it unchecked then rechecked No difference.

It seems I am not sending anything out as best as I can see so I made sure my windows and Norton firewalls were off and still no difference.

I tried a simple update with my other site (On a different server) and had the same problem so I believe it is something on my machine.

Any help please

Thanks John

I am sure this is not it but I have come across this one. Try reviewing settings under File, Publish Web Enter
publish destination Make sure it is http and not ftp.

If this is the case and you then get different error messages call the host as you have corrupted the FP server extensions.

Just a thought.

Take care,

Brian

Does anyone have anything further to add regarding this issue?
I recently started getting the same error, though it always indicates the same port...

425 could not open data connection to port # 5554 operation timed out.

I am using FP 2002 and the web i am trying to upload has a sub-folder with approximatly 1100 pages.
I get the error if i try to "Publish Web" without "throttling" the number of web pages it tries to upload...
It is curious, as i can navigate to the folder and "not publish" all but a few(30 or so) at a time and get them uploaded over multiple attempts, if i try over a certain number, i get the timeout.

Any thoughts?
(I have removed/reset the web page account and all FP extensions via the whm panel for my host)

Hi John
did you get this problem resolved?? I'm having the same problem with my websites.
Everything was fine until I switched internet service from TimeWarner to Verizon.
The techs at Verizon first told me that I was probably using a 'static IP' with Time Warner and verizon residential customers are blocked from FTP.
Then they told me that on their end there should be know blocks with uploading.
My websites are hosted by two different hosts so I know it isnt a hosting problem.

From Dataweb:
This is typically because the user's machine is protected by a firewall. The work around is to make sure your FTP client is configured to use "passive" mode when connecting to your web over FTP.

hope it help,

I have also run into this problem when using a shared server. You are competing with others on that server so when you try to upload a large web like 1100 pages as mentioned in a above post you will have to wait your turn. Try again in the night or some other low traffic time.
