Looking for Server Suggestions - 1/16/2006 18:11:33
Hi everyone, I figured I would ask the experts before researching deadends online. I may have a shot at a job opening but I do not really know much about Networking, just my home network and Servers other than a bit of windows 2000 server. The company that i'm going to talk with is a small graphics company and they have 1000's of cd's full of images that they want to put on a local server for fast access. They all use apple computers(which i'm unfimilar with too) and they are looking to put all their info on this server. Can anyone point me in a good direction for information on this matter? Looking for best servers and software for hosting this info and networking ideas. The office has 10 workstations and will have one local server. Thanks in advance for any tips! Scott

Where are they located at? How much space/bw required? Monthly budget?

they are in western Pennsylvania (Reading). It's a company one of my good friends works for. They currently have everything on cd's (brochure layouts, catalog images, etc.) and they also have someone who host some of thier clients websites under them. Well, my buddy told me his boss was threatened by the hosting guy a couple of times for more money and he wants to just bring everything inhouse. I think any hosting should be at a remote hosting facility (I currently use crystaltech and they've been great) But he wants an inhouse server for the graphics and inhouse files. I did find xserve raid and xserve g5's which look like they would do the job but I would have to somehow learn this at lighting speed. :( did you have suggestions? You've always pointed me the right way! :)

Any idea what type of server specs they need? Would they rather pay the top dollar for excellent support, or a low budget server with just ok support? We're talking about another $100-$150/mo (over just a standard ded box) for a fully managed dedicated server with support that replies within an avg of 2-10 minutes, but sometimes up to 30. Do you need the ability to use the server to resell hosting? (IE create normal accounts, as well as reseller accounts) Windows/Linux OS, or does it not matter?
