Hi
I used to have 4 subdomains (with different content, navigation & theme) with my previous host (I could create them in their control panel quite easy). Now, I have moved all my domains and the hosting to GoDaddy.

Up to now, I am very happy I moved there, but I feel lost with the topic Subdomain.

Does anyone use the hosting of GoDaddy and has anyone dealt with the topic within this host?

I cannot publish no matter what. I get error messages from FP like possible reason 1., 2., 3. no fp extensions activated etc.

From their DNS Manager I created the subdomain eg. callie and forwarded it to http://www.callie.domainname.com, which from what I saw afterwards points to a separate IP.

Then I went to their Hosting Manager created the 5 Subdomains I wanted.

Back to the DNS Manager I notice that the rest 4 point to the same IP.

I have put them all as A (HOST) and two of them I have put also as CNAMES (Aliases) one of which is pointing to another IP. (From their DNS Manager I created the subdomain eg. callie and forwarded it to http://www.callie.domainname.com, which from what I saw afterwards points to a separate IP.)

The first time I called they said put them as A and not CNAME.
The second time said go to the Hosting Manager and create them there.

Any help is highly appreciated

Usually it is an A record. And usually it would be in the folder. So for example, if the subdomain was named callie, you would publish your files and have a folder called callie and bringing up www.example.com/callie would be the same as callie.example.com

I do not think you need another IP address though - this is usually for other purposes.

The point is that I had them as A record (all pointing to the same IP) but then it didn't work and in the second call, they suggested I go to the Hosting Manager and create the folder there, which I did and it still didn't work.

Then everytime I would get that a data error occurred or by retrying it that no web can be found at this address. Then it asks if the FP should create a web and after I click ok, I get Server error: Web already exists [:@]


I also tried to publish it as a subweb but everything got messed up. No navigation of the subwebs would show any script on the head part would malfunction or it would be paralyzed and some gifs of the theme of the subweb were also altered. So I had to wipe them out and put anew the domain content.[8|]

Could it be that the host has to activate the FP for the subdomains additionally?
Or where do I go wrong?[8|]

It really all depends on how their server is set up. You can have all the A records (sub-domains) pointing to the same IP address and that is usually the case.

It sounds like comesthing might be corrupted - have you asked them to reinstall the FPSE?

I just called them up & they said that I should uninstall and reinstall because they could see the subdomains but they were not accessible.
I already unistalled them.
Hope this time works.
I'll come back tell you what happened.

I still get the same FP warnings I mentioned in the previous post.

What did their support say? Did you stay on the phone with them while you tested everything? I only have used Goddady for domain registration and actually I have quit using them for that. And I only know how some hosting compnies handle sub-domains etc.

I stayed on the phone while they were looking at it.
They said that indeed the subdomains are there, but they also could not access them. [8|] (Sounds like they tried publishing sth on it to test and it didn't work out ?)
And then, they said uninstall and after some 30 mins reinstall and that would do. But it didn't. [8|]

[ I cannot complain about their service because they were polite and they did give me the impression that they are trying to help. (my previous host was the worst ever)]

I went in a while ago and I delete all the subdomains I had created and all other extras I did. And then I created again only one subdomain in the hope of. I tried publishing but no luck.

Did you verify they were using Frontpage?

yes
they do. all my domains do work all fine; it' s just these subdomains that I do not manage to publish. As if there is sth blocking.

Could it be that it is on purpose like that, so at a point you give it up and buy instead extra domains?

Not too sure about their plans. I have never used them unfortunately for hosting. Did you try the sub-domains without trying to create the sub-webs? That might be the problem as well. If you sub-domain is callie and your sub-web is callie, then usually there is a folder called callie (www.example.com/callie). And since this was created by the server for a sub-domain, FP might be having a problem with it for whatever reason on their servers.

yes that was the first thing I tried. The subweb thing I tried later.

I have tried to publish as a subweb to the server subdomain and also as a subdomain to the subdomain but nothing worked.

I tried different combos of tricks, but they didn't take me any further. So the only thing left making sense to me is that, there is sth in their server that blocks me. [&:]

You are their client, they should help you. Call them again and tell them that their previous suggestion did not work. GoDaddy is on my top list of bad hosts.

If you are looking for very low cost hosting, www.serverfly.com seems to be pretty good. I don't know their average response time, but you would at least be taken care.

I did not call them but...

I solved it.

This is how:

The domain I wanted to breakdown into subdomains is hosted for free on a Linux Server.

One out of the 4 Domains I have with them is on a Windows Server (where I pay for the hosting).

So I thought of giving it a try on that Server and tada...
it worked![:D]

Now I need to do the forwarding and the masking and over. [;)]

But I still think what I experienced is a major turn off.[:'(]

Hm hosted for free? That might have been the problem - most free servers do not support sub-domains. But at least it is all working now.

Hi Corey,

yes this is possible , but it didn't cross my mind.
The funny thing is that they never mentioned sth like that in any of my calls. (they didn't dare or what?)

And I cannot say that I was not convinced they were not trying (though you never know sometimes what a great actor/ress one could be).

One thing I noticed about their service is that the people they have there are excellent in sales & marketing.

Very polite, very patient and after you confirm they have no other open issue, they try to get out of your pocket some extra $$, serving you in the most diplomatic and tempting way another product. I wish I could find such employees too for my business.

After every call, a customer satisfaction questionnaire for which they ask you if they are allowed to send it.

While my previous host (1 &1) was rubbing on my face the FAQ on what ever I would ask relevant or not and of course it would be always my fault. Only after 1000s of calls they would admit they had a problem but at the same minute claim they fixed it. And did I mention very rude & expensive? No wonder after New Year's so many transferred. (inside info)
