Upload via FrontPage changes extension of index file - 1/18/2006 16:45:53
Hi, Am using FrontPage 2000. My home page is named index.htm....but each time I edit this file and try to upload the changes to my host, I receive a very brief message (as the upload finishes) stating that the file will be saved as index.html. I've made sure the htdocs do not contain more than one file named "index"... and that this file is always named index.htm. However, the FrontPage Client insists on renaming the file to index.html. The only page that has this problem is my Home page. All the other pages display the .htm extension. My stats display a large number of 404 error messages. Am wondering if the 404's are being created by the above extension confusion. For the sake of uniformity, I would prefer that all pages of my site use the .htm extension. What do I need to do to resolve this issue? Thanks, Chan1

Contact your hosting company - this is usually something on their end. And it really does not matter - htm / html are basically the same.

Corey...Prior to posting I contacted my host. Their reply was that they have no authority to go into the htdocs and change files during uploads. I'd be pretty unhappy with any intrusion of that type, if such were the case. As near as I can determine it's still a FrontPage issue. Chan1

Some hosts provide that type of support and some do not. I know on IIS - if I change the default from index.htm to index.html upon publishing, it changes and then I need to go into IIS and make the changes.

Found this in a FrontPage discussion group at Microsoft: "Because the server you are publishing to has index.html set as the default document (home page) Your host would have to be willing to change the order of default documents for your web account....FP will always rename the home page to what is required on your web host so that your site can be accessed." Well, now I know who's changing the extensions. Now I wonder if any of this triggers 404 errors. breddie

You might go back to your hosting company for support. I have never seen a hsting company that is not willing to do this. It is possible because if you are pointing to index.htm and it is actually index.html and not rerouting - it might cause problems

Thanks for your help Corey. Looks like I've pretty much pounded this subject into the ground. I contacted my host support and they are willing to change the default if necessary. Perhaps as you say, it doesn't make much difference whether one or the other extension is used so long as the host and viewers are able to open the page correctly. Regarding the 404's, my stats show that most of them were generated by spiders...all nameless, so I'm hoping none of the major SE's are included in that group. breddie
