I too only have my toe in the water with css. I am starting the tutorial at 3schools.com

Before I start, I wanted to read about how to add a page to the drop down menu (when cursor hovers over the navigation and then a drop down appears). I bought a template about a year ago, and couldn't even figure that out. At this 3schools link,

is the list of subjects to view as examples. Could someone tell me if anywhere on this list explains what I am asking about drop downs when adding pages? Thanks Much


I also was thinking of buying the template here on Outfront title "looking up" and thought I would just tear into it and see if I can figure it out. Would that be a good idea?

I guess I'm need to be pointed in the right direction to start.

Drop-downs can be a bit of a pain because although you can do CSS only drop down menus for standard compliant browsers, IE needs a bit of Javascript to make the dropdown bit work.

There are a few different CSS dropdown examples you could try.

Whichever you choose remember that you should included a way for people to get to all the pages on your site without using the dropdowns as they have a tendency to be inaccessible unless you're using a mouse - so at least, have a good sitemap.

I think you're also asking about updating the menu across your site and the easiest way to do that (may have misunderstood) if so then you want to look at Server Side Includes (either SSI or PHP includes) whereby the menu that appears on all your pages actually exists in a separate file and is "included" in your site pages by means of a SSI call or a PHP call depending which one you use. If you need to add another page to your site you just add a single item to your separate menu page and it is included throughout your site.

Thanks Tailslide,
I was looking around for some templates as I will purchase one and try again, (since I know 2% more now). Anyway I found these instructions on changing the links, which will help me with a template. I hope these instructions will allow me to add, delete and edit links on the drop downs of an already made template. Will these instructions do that??
I wanted to post it for other newbies to css.

That'll allow you to change add delete and edit links, but to change link colours, backgrounds etc. you'll need to look at their other support pages and/or get yourself a basic html book. I've just had a quick look at their support section and they have quite detailed instructions on how to edit files (for example this page on editing the colour of your template), so you should be okay.
