.asp with MSSQL or .php with MySQL - 1/24/2006 2:14:13
Hi I have developed a web-site using .asp script and a MySQL database. Because I needed both a .com and .co.uk domain extension, I chose “1and1.co..uk” as my hosting company. It is also cheaper to phone a Uk number, if you need telephone support. I signed the deal with 1and1, only to find the following. When I tried to publish the web-site using FP2003, I got the message that the server didn’t support .asp I called the help desk and asked why. It seems that with 1and1, you either use .asp and a MSSQL database or .php and use a MySQL database. My website has about 22 .asp pages. In my situation, would you (1) Convert the web-site from .asp to .php (which is what was suggested by 1and1 and I screamed internally as loud as I could). (2) Convert the database from MySQL to MSSQL. I don’t know anything about MSSQL but it sounds like it is not free. (although the SQL should be similar) (3) Find another service provide which does support the use of .asp and MySQL and suffer the financial hit. Wishing he had read the small print first Lawrence

I'm not an expert at this but my choice would be in order of least brain-frazzling: Number 3 Number 1 Number 2

Hi I spoke again to the hosting company. No, they said, either Windows (.asp) and MSSQL or Linux (.php) and MySQL. However, the good news is, they will give me my money back and allow me to cancel. I have decided to go for Option 3, a new Hosting provider. Many thanks Lawrence
