FP Navigation Issue - 1/24/2006 13:19:20
Greetings everyone,
I found a similar post to my problem dating back to 2001 but I thought I'd ask for some assistance before proceeding to solve my problem.

For some time when publishing from my local machine to server I was receiving a message...an error occurred accessing your FrontPage web files. Authors - if authorizing against a web server, please contact the webmaster for this servers site. Webmasters - please see the servers system log for more details.

It took almost 2 months working with my webhost and I don't know what they did ( reset extensions ) I am guessing but that problem seems resolved now...

Well I thought all was well...now a new problem surfaced. When I publish from my local machine to the server I receive a message saying.

FrontPage has detected that changes you have made to the navigation structure conflict with changes another author has made to the web you are publishing to. What do you want to do?
O Do not replace the navigation structure on the destination web
O Replace the navigation structure of the destination web
O Let FrontPage merge the changes.

Being quite unsure when publishing to the server I chose...Let FrontPage merge the changes. Well after that when I viewed the site in my browser all pages had no navigation in them at all. I called my webhost again and the next day everything looked back the way it was. I take it they restored a back-up copy of my site noting the changes I made local were not present on the site.

Next I tried creating a new folder on my local machine and published the website from the server to that. No problem I thought I had it. So I made some page changes and tried once again to publish back to the server. depressed the same message again came back and asked me what I wanted to do. I stopped from there and have been waiting a week now for a reply from my webhost.

Any idea's would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to be to hasty about this as the site is for biz and my webhost is about as helpful as my 83 year old mother.

P.S. I can edit the site live on the server and all works ok. I then publish the changed/added pages back to my local machine but this is not the way I'm used to publishing.
Please help...
Regards,
Mike...

This *may* be your problem. Editing live on the server isn't a good idea and is liable to confuse FP.

Personally I'd back up all the files to my local machine, then delete them from the server and re-publish back to the server, making sure you use FP's 'publish' function rather than ftp 'cos nothing's more liable to mess up your FPSEs than using ftp.

In the 6 years I have been using FP I never edited "live" on the server. This was the first I tried it from advise by somethat that said to see if I could publish back to my local machine.

If I can publish back to my local machine shouldn't the exact same files/etc exist on both local & host?

Thinking now about switching web hosts & publishing to another server with a temporary address till I get the DNS pointing to the new server. This would buy me time work out this problem. I just about had enough with my webhosts support anyway...which is next to none.

Well I did not receive much help on this issue so I stepped out on the ledge and gambled on changes I was not quite sure of. 4 successful publishes to server now.....case closed!
