Revamp - All comments please - 1/25/2006 13:06:40
I started a little local art project a year ago - a means of trying to promote my web design services to local artists. It seems to be established now and is set to continue (hopefully there are a few more artists to add back in this year). I've revamped it all for a number of reasons...

All comments/observations welcome...

Thanks!

I like it Rick. It's nice and tidy and everything is where you'd expect it to be.

A few things though,

  • Your web design advert in the left column either needs more padding, text to be justified or a different background colour.
  • Who's going to maintain the site? If they are, is it a good idea to include compliance stickers?
  • Overall the paintings suit the site colour scheme in most cases, but with one or two of the artists, I feel that the paintings' colour schemes clash too much with the website colours. I think it's probably that green background.
  • Also, the Contact Us page ends before my screen does, which shows the centre just cutting off with no apparent bottom border. Know what I mean?

Thanks Nicole,

1. Agree that my ad needs more padding or perhaps some more colour contrast somehow.

2. I'm maintaining the site - part of the reason for the revamp. I had an upload system before but most people still don't like to use such things, so they just send their photos and I put them on the page. I think this appeals to more poeple - bearing in mind there are still many out there who are not so 'techy-minded' yet. It also means that in future I will correct/crop their images and that will help the site's appearance

3. Can't do much about the paintings and 'clashes' - I guess whichever way I design it (except maybe ultra plain?) there will always be some image that don't 'blend'

4. Yes, I think I know what you mean about the contact page but even if I moved it up a bit it would probably still 'cut-off' for people on 800 X 600 res screens, although admittedly they're the minority nowadays.

Thanks for the feedback:)

Thanks Dave

How much is "too much!"?:) (do you mean the background or just the frequency of use?)

I need to see this on some more PCs - I have two TFT monitors and although it's fairly bright it didn't seem too overpowering to me - on these. But I suppose there is quite a bit of green there and maybe the bgnd shows up a fair bit different on other monitors - will be checking...

Cheers

....Probably why so many art/photography sites use black, white or grey backgrounds.

No, what I mean is that in all but that page, the centre column with all the content sits flush against the top and bottom of the screen no matter what screen resolution. But the contact us page stops short of the bottom on screen resolutions above 1024x768 and looks odd.

So you mean the page lenght is too short - yes?

Nice and tidy, simple is best... I totally agree!

Really couldn't get on with the mint green. I'm not sure if it is the wrong colour or if the whole thing just looks a little too bright.

Just one other minor thing that bugged me... Can you center your W3C logo's please :):):)

I'd really hate to be irksome to you Rocket Boy, so I've centred them up:)

Thanks for feedback on the green - still investigating this when and where I have the chance.

Cheers:)

how about if you keep the green but take the saturation right down so it looks very subtle ?

Okay...

here's the site with the toned down version

here's the previous colour bgnd

What do you think? (anyone)

EDIT...

Here's a third - perhaps a bit too insipid look
(ignore the bright green border round the content area which would need adjusting to match)

The first two looked identical to me, sorry lol... I also like the third one though... Keeping the green on the body and header but reducing the intensity of the background works good.

I knew it - you lot all like insipid!!! :)

Okay - thanks, I'll probably go for a compromise between my bright, lush look and... insipid! :)

Cheers :)

lol

Maybe its the tone that works... A different colour of similar brightness and intensity might work 10 times better!?
