Broadband Speed Test - 1/26/2006 23:08:23
I've just changed ISP's following a lengthy and painful experience with the old one, yes Kitka I'm now with Internode! First thing I did was check the speed via the ISP's website and gladly it returned a result of about 1250kbps. Curiously, I decided to check the other speed test i was relying on to complain to my old ISP. the one at this site http://www.bandwidthspeedtest.com/ and it returned a result no more than a minute of 447kbps? How can that be? It's such a different speed? I went on to check out a few live webcam sites and my current speeds were obviously in that higher bracket, so what of the bandwith speed test? Is it accurate? Anyone else compared the results from that site against any other? Nicole

Nicole, My understanding of these bandwidth speed tests is they're very dependent on how far away your are from their server. So if you're using a site that is half way across the world, undoubtedly you will be going through quite a few other servers along the way and some additional delay is likely. And because bandwidth speed is measured over time, any delays will translate into a lower speed. It's like calculating your average speed when driving to your grandmother's house. If she lives down the street from you, you'll achieve a high average speed. But if she lives on the other side of town, and you have to navigate through congested traffic and lots of stop lights, then your average speed will be much lower. You should always use a site that is very near to your location. This would explain why you're getting higher speed results from your own ISP's speed test, because they're very likely the first server you go through when connecting to the Internet. From the bandwidthspeedtest.com site: Our test server is located in New York, United States. The more networks that the data has to cross, the more factors other than your connection will contribute to the result. Users in Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America will have less accurate (often lower) results until we add servers closer to you.

How can that be? It's such a different speed? I don't have any useful information. But I do have some data. About 7.10pm (NSW time) I tested my connection with both services: The Internode test service (which is not Internode AU at all, it is actually http://www.dslreports.com/ ) gave me 422/107 for my service which is nominally 512/128. http://www.bandwidthspeedtest.com/ gave me 406.6 for download but did not test upload speed. This isn't drastically different to dslreports. Bandwidthspeedtest.com is hosted by GoDaddy at Rackspace and www.dslreports.com is hosted at EASYDNS.COM - both of which seem superficially to be located in USA. It would really be good if we had a service located in Australia for some accuracy.
