I am having a problem with changing the routing settings on our server. It appears that our Exchange Server has been attacked and we have been sending out a stack of mail. I have changed the routing settings so that we do not do routing. This stops us being used as a relay but means that nobody can send us mail as it gets bounced with a message saying that mail relaying is not allowed.

I believed that it should allow us to receive mail from outside that was coming in and mail that we sent, but should only bounce mail from outside that was coming in and then going back out again.

Am I missing something here?

Try this in this order:

Go into the mail client you are using and set it so that the account needs to authenticate outgoing mail using the same credentials you use for incoming. How to do this depends on your mail client. One way or another, this will need to be done for all email clients using the Exchange server.

If that doesn't work, you may have completely disabled relaying, which you don't want to do. You want to relay, but only authenticated clients. I'm not sure what version of Exchange you're using, but I've set this up for an older version (5.5 I think) so I might be able to help you.

Thanks for the quick response. We are using Exchange Server 5.5.

In Exchange Server I chose Connections/Internet Mail Service/Routing and changed from Reroute incoming SMTP mail sent to our domain to Do not reroute incoming SMTP mail.

I have now changed this back again so that we can receive email.

We are using Microsoft Outlook 2000 with Exchange Server 5.5 How do I change the account to authenticate outgoing mail? Sorry to be a bit slow, but I can't find anything in the settings![:)]

Ok, where you were at in IMS/Routing you'll see a Routing Restrictions... button. In there you can specify who is allowed to Relay. If your email server is only used in house (unlikely) you can do this by IP address. If not, click the box Hosts and clients that successfully authenticate.

Outlook 2000

Not certain about 2000 because I use 2003, but I think that if you specify that you are connecting to an Exchange Server and not a POP server, it will take care of the set up for you. If you are configured for POP...let me do a quick web search and get back to you.

Unfortunately not, yet. Outlook 2000 connecting to Exchange Server is how we are set up. I changed the option in the routing tab as you suggested but we still appear to be sending out spam mail.

It's really worrying because it seems that the only way we can stop sending is to stop all routing and that means we can't get mail from our customers which means no business?

I am really stuck here.
