publishing problem - 2/1/2006 14:48:37
Hi

I have the following problem when i use Frontpage to publish.
I have never published a website from my computer before. I have subscribed to a host , signed on and using the host control panel installed FP Extensions.

When I try to publish from Frontpage...
In the destination window I key in the location: http://.........../mywebname.com and get the following error message returned:-

Unable to open ' http://...... server error. The server at 'http://... does not appear to have the FP Extensions installedPossible causes:
1. The web server may not have FP Extensions installed
2. Server out of service
3. If connecting through a proxy server - proxy settings may be incorrect
4. An error may have occured in webserver

I rang the host helpline and they couldn't understand it. As a test they gave me the username and password for a space on one of their other computers. This was a FTP space rather than one beginning http

I tried to publish to this new address. After keying it into the destination window a window opened asking me for name and password. When these were correctly entered the same window popped up again with the name still keyed but the password reset to blank..and so on ad infinitum

Am I doing something wrong?

Is there some setting on my PC which is incorrectly set?

Have I some sort of bug?

Any help gratefully received

Andy

This is usualy solved by hitting the publish button again or re-applying the FPSE.

With the password - there is a setting on the server that can be changed so that it remember the password but that is the least of your worries.

Thanks for replying.

Unfortunately once i clear the error message I then have to enter the publishing address again...and I get the same error message ad infinitum.

I have reinstalled FP Extensions on the host site - so there is no problem there

Can you hosting company connect to the site using FP? Since it was an FTP, it sometimes takes a couple of times for FPSE to fully work, especially if you are on a *NIX platform

Hi Corey,

I'm very new to this - so I am not totally up to speed with abbreviations -
I am still getting the same problem when I try to publish. I have, as a test, copied some pages of my web over to the host site and they display OK ish - with dynamic HTML working - which suggests to me that FP Extensions are installed OK. It seems to be a problem at my end of things

FPSE - Frontpage Server Extensions.

How did you copy some of the pages on the web server? Depending on the code, FPSE might not have anything to do with the displaying of your website

I got the pages on by copying them one at a time into the public.html file. I used the File manager facility in the Control Panel of the Host Web Server

That is basically the same thing as FTP which can corrupt your FPSE. It sounds like your extensions are corrupted.

If you can reset them thru the control panel, you can try that - or contact your hosting company and ask them to reinstall them

A quick update:

I Still can't publish using Frontpage

The Host sever suggested I use FTP

I downloaded a copy of WS_FTP to try that and when I try to connect it says "the server address could not be found on the network"

Please help

Desperate

Can you verify the FTP information with the hosting company? Can you call them and ask them to fix it. With them suggesting to use FP shows they do not understand FP all that much

Are you able to bring up your site in a browser?

You need to contact your host and get them to confirm what the ftp address is if you're still getting an error when trying to ftp.

Using ftp will get your files onto the server, same as using your control panel will, but as Corey said, will probably corrupt the FPSE and any FP widgets you've got on the site won't work without functioning FPSEs.

<edit>Ooops! Corey beat me to it!</edit>

Thanks for replying.

Corey, I can bring the site into a browser.

I've confirmed the address once over the phone.

I just get the feeling there could be something wrong with my PC - like its not communicating properly.

If you can get your site up in a browser locally, and you have a working connection to the internet, i.e. you can get to other sites okay (which it seems you can cos you're here :)), then it's most likely a problem with your hosts.

That said, I suppose it could be a problem with FP itself. Have you tried reinstalling it? I seem to remember there've been people around here who've had similar problems in the past - a search of the forums here may uncover some useful info/possible solutions.

If you would like - I can set you up an FTP account or even a FP account on my server to see if it is you or them

That sounds like a good idea

Thanks for that Corey.

I tried to connect to your site using WS_ftp and got the same: INVALID SERVER, server address not found on network.

So I guess theres some sort of problem with my PC?!

It is quite possible. Do you have any type of firewall / AV program running? Have you recently updated Windows XP?

I have the windows firewall installed as well as Nortons antivirus software.

As well as these I have, downloaded onto my machine, a freeware antivirus program called AVG and an anti spy program called Ad-Aware SE

I haven't recently updated windows XP

Try switching your firewall off briefly and having a go. If it works with the firewall off, it'll mean that somewhere it the configuration for the firewall you'll need to set to let your computer know it's safe to communicate with that address. That said, reading back through your posts it sounds like you're getting some sort of connection, so it doesn't sound like it's a firewall problem, but worth a shot I suppose. Could be something else that's conflicting.

If you are running more than one AV app at the same time that could cause problems - as a test you could disable the firewall and both AV's and see what happens. Reading the above though I'd say that your host has little experience with FPSE.

Edit: Sorry Womble, we cross posted there. :)

Thanks Womble and caz

I've just disabled the XP firewall, rebooted to make sure it was effective, and tried again.

Same problem unfortunately.

I will try with the Anti _virals off next

Curious can you go to a command prompt and then get a connection to your FTP server IP thru a command prompt? Go to the command prompt, type in telnet <server ip> 21 and [return]. Something like telnet 12.12.12.12 21. And then it will either say connection failed or you will get another window

RE: publishing problem - 2/4/2006 11:56:02
OK....Using command prompt typed in telnet address with 21 on the end. Nortons window popped up saying PROGRAM CONTROL Low Risk - what do you want to do? PERMIT (recommended)....ticked the box saying 'always choose this option' . Then it connected.

Went back to WS_ftp program and tried to connect...same error as usual

Back to DOS...typed in the telnet command and address without the 21 and it returned a message saying 'could not connect on port 23'

Now If I type in telnet <server ip> 21 the computer connects fine....however I still cant connect using WS_ftp

Presumably??? my computer is defaulting to port 23 and failing

RE: publishing problem - 2/4/2006 13:05:17
There should be somewhere the in configuration of your ftp client where it will let you specify the port used to connect (probably somewhere on the connections or options menu). If it's not 21 (and it sounds like it might be 23), change it to 21. If that doesn't work, contact your hosts and check that it is port 21 you should be using. 21 is the default ftp port which most ftp servers use, but it's possible they may be using another one.

SOLVED IT....WOOOHOOOO! I'M In....I can connect to my host site and to Corey's

I checked all the security and I had on both Windows XP Firewall as well as Nortons Firewall....switching off Nortons firewall, leaving the windows one on and I connect.

I'd like to thank all of you who helped me narrow the problem down, especially Corey and Womble

Thanks

RE: publishing problem - 2/4/2006 14:56:21
Glad you've sorted it Andy...though we probably should have mentioned earlier that Norton's the spawn of the devil....*blush* :)

Seriously though, the Windoze firewall ain't the best one in the world, and from what I recall isn't too configurable, and having two firewalls running, as you've found's likely to cause conflicts. If I had to choose I'd choose Norton over Windows - I can't believe I'm actually saying that! - after having Norton AV on my last PC and it hogging so many system resources it got permanently banished. You should be able to configure Norton though to let you connect to the ftp server while still having it switched on. Norton's help file or their support site should tell you how to get in to do it.
