IP addresses - 2/2/2006 9:41:04
Whe I log into my forum, after about 2 or 3 minutes (every time), a guest will appear. This guest always has the same IP address, is always there without fail within 5 minutes of me logging on but if I log out again he or she will also disappear. The IP address does not belong to any member and who ever it does belong to has made no effort to leave a post or join the forum.

Does anybody know what could be causing this. I have no way of telling if it is a real genuine guest or if something has gone wrong. Is there any chance that somebody could be using the background functions of my PC when I am online? I only ask because I am wonering if the new IP address is actually me disguised.

The IP address is not my regular IP.

You could try doing a whois search on the IP address and see if it yields any useful info - dnsstuff.com

Could be one of your forum members? I once got paranoid about one of my forums when I kept getting an unknown guest there...turned out it was one of my members using FF's tabbed browsing and because they hadn't actually been active on the forum for over 5mins they were showing up as a guest.

Would you believe it... I went to copy and paste the offending IP and they have now disappeared LOL

I do use tabbed browsing an awful lot, maybe it is just something to do with that.

Thanks womble, I will do the DNS check as soon as I get the chance.

Could be. Like I said, a similar problem had me paranoid a few months back. I spent a whole weekend practically staring at the screen just waiting for my unwanted visitor to come online and ended up banning the IP....all rather embarassing when I discovered I'd locked out one of my legitimate visitors... *blush*

Do you have the google toolbar installed? Perhaps they're using that to make us all human spiders.

HAHAHAAAA human spiders.. Excellent.

I have the Google toolbar in IE but not FF. The problem seems to manifest itself in both browsers.

Does the Google bar use cookies or anything like that? Not that I'm an expert on such things but could it be beaming info back to the mothership about where on the web you are? Just an idea.

This had crossed my mind Womble... The thing is, I use a few different forums and mine is the only one that has this strange IP add appear all the time. I am pretty sure that I am not being tracked.

I am considering sending a link to this thread to Google in the hope of any explantion. what do you think?

I probably was, it has been known but... since about 2 days after posting this thread the mystery Google IP has disappeared.

Too much of a coincidence for me Taz... Going to consult my copy of The Da Vinci Code and look at online newspaper clippings about Roswell just to be on the safe side.

Can't be too careful :):)
