We should do more flag waving. Unfortunately if anyone in this country tries waving a Union Flag they're immediately accused of being imperialist pigs or worse.

We have a similar problem here ... sort of.

When people fly the "Stars and Bars" (Confederate Flag), they are accused of being racist. It's part of our history and represents ideals and a regional heritage for many people that has nothing to do with slavery or racism.

And I really beleive in the ideals for which the American Flag is supposed to stand for, but think it's a political fashion statement for most people -- shallow nationism instead of real patriotism.

And if people want to protest the governement, they ought to burn the dollar bill or something instead of the very symbol of their right and liberty to protest in the first place.

But sometimes symbols are just an embodiment of what someone loves or hates, even if they don't understand its intended meaning at all.

I believe a bit of flag-flying also goes in the "yard" (in the American English sense, of course):)

True. A lot of homes have a flag out front. But even the businesses don't have the sense to bring it in during really bad weather, and most do not raise/lower it at sunrise/sunset, or ever for that matter.

And the tattered ones on people's cars are just a disgrace. When a flag is worn out, we are supposed to burn it (NOT as a protest). What do you guys do in the UK?

We are a little more reserved

Well, its not for me to say but my guess is if you asked 100 people who fly the stars and bars (in Ohio anyway) how they feel about a Black President the answer would be the same for all 100. Care to take a guess. Granted, it is an American historical symbol but its meaning in Ohio at least, is pretty clear. But, as I said, it's not for me to decide. <smile>

I am very proud of the American Flag and loved it even more when I saw it on the side of the rescue chopper that picked me up after being shot down in Vietnam. I serve on a VFW honor guard so I'm reminded often what it means to feel real patriotism.

Okay, I'll never get on the soap box again! <smile>

Thanks...Dan

Without wanting to get into the area of patriotic rantings :) I'm an immigrant to the UK but I'm extremely proud to be a Brit and it somewhat annoys me that even when the flag is flown - people can't even fly it the right bloody way up!!
