Kontera DynamiContext Ads on OutFront - 2/8/2006 12:35:46
I'm testing contextual ads -- the kind that lots of folks love to hate -- on OutFront. We're only showing them to unregistered visitors in the forums.

Here's a site that explains how they work.

http://www.kontera.com/

You may need to log out of the forums if you want to see what I'm talking about.

I don't believe that these ads do any harm, but I suspect many will disagree. Here is your chance to convince me that ads like this are a mistake for OutFront. I suspect I will be sorry that I asked for input on this, but I can't seem to resist.

I have mixed feelings about them from several standpoints. Maybe they work better on some sites than others.

I tried something similar with Amazons beta program and removed the code in less than five minutes. I've also been contacted several times by a company that offers the same style advertising, even offered more money per click if I give it a trial run. I'm not inclined yet to give it a try so I'll be looking forward to hear what others say and glad you brought this up.

First, I find the ads annoying. They pop-up (despite my pop-up blocker :)).

Second, the ads cover content. Since my site is primarily educational, I want people to have an online learning experience where they are not annoyed (though who knows if they get as annoyed as I).

Third, I have several internal hyperlinks in content on every page, words linked to related information. So a novice needing additional information can get it but a more experienced visitor need not click the links. If someone clicks on a link because they want more information besides possibly confusing, they get a pop-up ad....annoying.

ANNOYING = VISITOR LEAVES SITE

I'd be interested if there are any stats about site visitors acceptance of these ads, or if they work better on one site than another.

I would be more interested in how much more or less profitable they are compared to Adsense.

So far they're less profitable than Adsense, but I can use both at the same time. My clickthru rate on adsense has dropped as a result of the Konterra ads. It looks right now as though I'm making about as much on Konterra as I'm loosing in Adsense. The folks at Konterra are telling me that my numbers should improve over the next few weeks as they optimize my site.

We shall see.

I'm not aware that they do. They just put an underline under some words. Are you seeing something different than that?

The ads do not occur within hyperlinks.

Also, you can block the ads from any part of a page you want to block it from.

Only when I indicate that I want to by mousing over the underlined word.

My concern is that, since I have a number of internal hyperlinks on each page, that the other hyperlinks would be too much.

Within specific cells or tables (yes I'm still not using CSS) or within, say, a paragraph or paragraphs?

So, if you designate that the hyperlinks don't pop-up, what happens. Are you brought to a website's page?

I've been told they these types of ads, because they are contextural, may violate the AdSense TOS. I don't know this to be true, but that's what I've been told.

You use span tags. Works with tables or without.

I don't know what you mean. The ads do not display a popup unless the user mouses over the underlined word. The popup goes away when the user moves the mouse off the ad.

If such were the case then Konterra would have no publishers. There is no way any pubisher would switch from Adsense to Konterra.

I haven't ruled out the idea completely and the contact is going to get back to me in about two months.

I recently hired someone to develop a content management system for my site. The project hasn't quite started yet so I hope I don't chicken out thinking about the tedious task before me. :):)

Anyway, when completed I'll be more inclined to experiment with different ads as they will be much easier to manage, to add to my site then remove if that's my decision. I'll be interested to see how it goes for you. My guess is that your format lends itself better than mine, though I can be wrong.

Sorry, I misunderstood you initially. I thought you meant that they don't popup at all.

Ya know, if you could just filter out the ads that are fraudulent like the google ads on this site that say "Free FrontPage 3.0" and other offers of free software like "Free Photoshop", I believe that would go a long way to getting your visitors to put up with ads.

Sorry for the above rant Thomas. :-)

I haven't noticed any such ads myself, but I'm quite sure of one thing - It would not have an impact on wether or not visitors would put up with ads. I just don't see how they are related.

I have noticed that the ads only work within IE and not Firefox.

If they are to be an effective advertising scheme surely they should reach as many users as possible.

They worked in Firefox for me initially ... but only until I banned them with the Adblock extension :)

They work in Firefox for me, but we're blocking them for registered users regardless of the browser they use.
