I quit my high paying System administration job to run my business full time. I was juggling both for as long as I could, but after the junior designer I hired to pick up the slack left for greener pastures, my wife and I decided it was time to take the plunge and depend on the business income full time. I still have a couple steady consulting jobs for income, but it's sink or swim time.

I want to thank everyone here for keeping me sharp both with their critiques and troubleshooting as well as the problems and solutions they've posted that I've either learned from or helped out with.

If anyone here who has gone through this transition has advice or suggestions, I'm all ears.

Can't think of any really clever advice - just keep paperwork for everything and keep backups of everything.

To get your name out there sign up to a few freelancing sites for web work. From there use those jobs as a portfolio.

Just one left field thought to jump start some income.

Thanks for the advice. Remarkably, the one thing I'm not worrying to much about is the amount of work we have. Right now we're burried. I'll take a look at freelance sites if things start to slow down or if we decide to again hire someone.

One of the first things I need to do is finish updating our company site's portfolio, which we've been working on. For ease of use, I've modified a photo gallery application so we can just take a screen capture and then use the add photo form to add a site to our portfolio. Much easier than trying to add by hand.

Get involved in as many Chambers of Commerce, Rotary Clubs, and other business networking organizations as you can. Be very active with that. It's amazing how many people either want a new web site or know someone who does.
